Email this morning says NCFC is requiring the girls to play all games this weekend with masks on. Ridiculous IMO and increases the risk for injuries, but if they think it is so unsafe to play, then why have the tournament at all?

I don't think I'd let my kid play a game in a mask. Don't get me wrong, I definitely support wearing masks in public places during a pandemic, but not while performing strenuous exercise. So I'd be pulling my kid out of the tournament if wearing a mask while playing was a requirement.

Wow. That's just stupid! Either cancel the thing or let them play without hindrance.
Is that an NL showcase?? I don't have a player in it, but I know some that are going to North Carolina for what I think is an NL showcase. Is that correct?

With this late change I wonder if the state of North Carolina has just mandated this...

With this late change I wonder if the state of North Carolina has just mandated this... The boys showcase was Nov 20-22 and this rule of required facemask while playing was NOT in effect. So I suspect you are correct with this statement.

Yes, they just changed the mandate effective 11/30. There have been college teams training/playing intra-squad scrimmages in masks all fall, so there is some precedent here for soccer. What is curious is how this would effect NC's pro/college teams (i.e. Carolina Panthers, Duke/UNC basketball etc)...

Not happy about this at all. Giving them three days to practice with masks on to get used to it? That's some bullshizat

Too many teams having to pull out due to cases or restrictions in their area. This is a showcase that is one of the biggest around. This is usually equivalent to Jeff Cup, Disney, etc. There are ECNL, GA, ECRL, SCCL, NPL teams in this showcase as well as other high level leagues from around the eastern US.

It could be that they want the girls to play and be safe at the same time. Many states have used this system since August. It's not the most ideal but at least it's helping some people and in a way reminding all the soccer or die people, there is still a virus out there killing people and it's real. I'm usually one of the first people to call out clubs on their money-grabbing ways. It's a tough time for everyone. Other than 1 or 2 clubs, GA soccer has been inconsistent at best with helping to fight the covid war. I feel those that do not want to wear a mask should talk to their coach and director to pull them out rather than nitpicking or going at people trying to help in their own little way to get this virus behind us. Instead, you should be happy that you are not back to virtual soccer or toilet paper juggling

There is not one shred of scientific or medical evidence showing that there has been any significant spread of Covid during soccer matches OR that wearing a mask while playing soccer does anything to limit any spread. In my opinion (probably no hard evidence to support this either), the kids are at a higher risk of injury with masks because of them obstructing their visual field. I would love to pull both daughters out for this weekend but it is too late now and their teams depend on them. NCFC waited until the day after the hotel cancellation deadline to announce this. Very poor.

Very poor. I have been a mask promoter overall but I have to agree with you that there is no data that wearing masks will protect the players. There have been a few (scientifically limited) studies that show no transmission at soccer. These were large cohort studies which is what epidemiologists often use. I don't think it is a money grabbing issue either. They have had 3 of the 4 showcases that they put on. I cannot say what drove the mask change as friends in North Carolina have said they had not heard anything about a mask mandate. Personally I just want my kid to play. There have not been enough games this season so far for my older kid.

If this isn't a money grab, then why wasn't it cancelled like the NL Showcase was? From my understanding once the mask mandate was made known (it applied to the NL Showcase as well so that means it's coming from the state of North Carolina) the NL Showcase was cancelled. There was even a rumor that the NL showcase wouldn't allow parents on the sidelines. So you get the pleasure or expense depending on how you look at it, of travelling to NC, staying in a hotel, eating out, and then dropping your kid off at the fields and then going and killing time at the mall. As other posters have agreed, there is zero evidence of transmission during soccer. There is even evidence of zero transmission during football. I know that some schools, if not all schools in the SEC are using Kinexon GPS wearables. That way after a game they are able to determine if members of the opposing teams spent 15 minutes or more in contact with one another. So far, I haven't heard of any instances were opposing players were deemed high risk contacts due to time limit exposure during games. PA has a "law, order, edict" similar to this and there was talk about the Pitt - VA Tech game having to be played with masks. Needless to say they miraculously found a "loophole" to prevent it. If this is what youth sports is going to be, then those states just need to cancel them until those governors feel it's safe for the children. But this does bring up an interesting question...are states like GA and SC, etc. going to benefit by default? Come to our tournament, you don't need to wear a mask to play...

From what I read the NL showcase was not canceled because of masks. It was canceled because too many teams were coming from areas with travel restrictions. There are a number of states where you have to quarantine when you get back. Many teams have dropped out of the NCFC showcase due to their states or regions adding travel restrictions as well as people popping positive on teams or being forced to quarantine. Historically the NL showcases have been part of qualifying for nationals and many times teams are playing teams from other regions. It becomes hard to run a qualifying showcase when you are losing teams. Yes there are additional teams allowed to play in the NL showcase now (not just the winners/runners up of their conference) but still it was my understanding that they will still using it as a qualifying tournament. Please correct me if I am wrong but that is what I read previously. As for NCFC nearly all of the teams are coming from Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Maryland and Virginia. Many of the Maryland teams dropped out. Btw the ECNL showcase in Greer also had a number of teams drop out as well (from the original list). These are challenging times. I am not amused to have my kid have to wear a mask while playing. I believe that it is NOT necessary or beneficial. However, I (and she) would rather play in games for the first time in a month than not play at all! I am glad they have not canceled and hope they can put on a great tournament. We are to play some really good teams and one that is absolutely fantastic. I am looking forward to seeing how my kid measures up!

Also the large number of teams coming to NCFC is probably 3 times larger the NL. Easier to move team around brackets. Also it is a showcase compared to a playoff were seedings and placement count

I believe that I read on this forum that MD has cancelled tournaments as well due to COVID. So without checking the internet, maybe those MD teams haven't been able to practice in weeks so they thought it best to withdraw. Self-quarantines are a tricky thing. I believe our school system has a policy where if you travel to a COVID "hot spot" you are supposed to self-quarantine for two weeks when you return. In a school system of over 40,000 students I wonder how many travelled over Thanksgiving to a "hot spot"? I wonder how many are self-quarantining? If you guessed a number approaching 0, I would probably agree with you.

It was because the health department pulled their permit. They said they weren't doing anything wrong but there were people at the girls one that turned up positive and the case numbers in the area were rising so they felt it wasn't safe. Several of the teams from that club pulled out of NCFC BEFORE the mask mandate (as did several teams from nearly every bracket). It may have been because they were quarantined from that tournament or other reasons. I agree that people are not self-quarantining. It is just not happening

My daughter was supposed to guest play with one of the higher level teams at her club for this tournament. When the parents found out about the mask mandate yesterday, they were not pleased at all. Almost to the point of pulling out.
Then we found out this morning that a team we were supposed to play on Friday pulled out, and we currently had no opponent. Our coach called to see what the deal was and was told they could not guarantee us a third game, but to check back tomorrow. Thing is hotels have to be cancelled by end of day today. End result is the team has now pulled out.
I am not a fan of playing in masks and can count on one hand the number of players I have seen playing with one dating back from August.

We have plenty of our players and parents not pleased either. Our coach and DOC sent us a message yesterday about it basically saying that we are going to play some great teams. We are in the same boat as the other teams. Let's play. As far as I know we had one player drop out. We were going to be missing another due to illness. We have a player who is guest playing now. No one wants to play with masks. I think the evidence shows it is not necessary. But just go play anyway.
