In beautiful Murfreesboro TN today where it is ❄️... Games should be fun today for the subregionals. 🥶🥶🥶 While we are lucky to have “snow” flurries during this amazing SCCL Cup weekend too. That’s all there is here. Some snow showers overnight-it was pretty.

Yeah the other half that’s up there said it was much colder this morning in Atlanta for the first game before heading up to odp for the afternoon game. Still hoping to have a real snow game! 4-5 inches of snow on the field and a steady down pour would be amazing. Especially with so many already doing digital learning 😂😂

I thought the fields were great and the weather was perfect yesterday. A couple of pretty good games too. Which ones did you get to see? 06G GA#1 handled KY #1 very easily - score was 3-0, but it wasn't even really that close. That one was fun to watch. GA #2 was tied 1-1 with TN#1 at half, but lost 1-4. Not too bad a game, though.

I was watching the game behind ours and it got pretty heated-parents yelling for red cards and all. I thought I was going to see some WWE smack down action...but it was all mouth. 😂 The fields were nice BUT they weren’t marked well.we had to use yellow cones on ours to mark sidelines. No midfield line discernible. Not sure what was up with that. Neither the front fields nor the back ones. 🤷🏻♂️

We played both Saturday & Sunday evening, thus the weather was brutal for both our games. Monday was nice because it was in the afternoon, despite it meaning we got home around 9PM last night.
All our games were on Field 1 which was turf, so we had good field conditions. For some reason our Sunday game was against the TN 06 #2 team (we are an 07 team), and despite losing 3-0, it was a competitive game.

Anyone think the trip up there was worth the $450+ spent on it?
08 Boys had three teams of 18 players go, yet only had 2 games schedules for Monday. So we had 22 players for the Monday game because of course they took everyone that wanted to play.
Fields and Refs were great. TN did a great job hosting. Weather was cold but good. Small hiccups of course but nothing major.
But until massive good changes take place in the Ga Odp program this will be our last event. Horribly unorganized and a massive bias towards certain players. Not just our kid, but others as well. Not sure how kids that start on ECNL teams end up on 3rd teams behind players that play Classic 1...

Yeah, there is more bias this year IMO. Especially since our group has a coach and his former players getting a lot of the first spots. Final year of ODP.

Was this weekend worth it? I think we could have accomplished the same thing in two days (1 less day for hotel stay and food, etc).
I look at ODP as more touches and the ability to play against teams from other states. I thought it was quite uneven (the teams). However, soccer is about opinions so...I believed my son did quite well at practices-scoring goals, playing well in the midfield-should he (and all of his club teammates) been on the 3rd team? I don’t know...but I’m not the coach so...
I think, for us, this will be our last year of ODP for several reasons- 1. My son is older (HS) and it’s not as important to him as it used to be 2. We have to travel a long way to practice and longer to events. 3. Better return on our investment from local individualized training.
We’ve enjoyed some aspects of ODP and loathed others. Overall, it’s been a pretty good experience.

I see more positives than negatives. Experiences depend on the age group. Almost every national team in the world gets blame for some form of bias or politics not just here and never stops. It could also be without any games played and very few practices coaches do not know some players well enough depending on who shows up. On the flip side two or more coaches at every field most sessions so far is a pretty good bargain, communication and administratively could be better organized but could translate into a higher cost? The idea of training and competing with some of the better players in the region, hearing something different, making new friends, and of course the opportunity to make the region team are worth both the time and money.

Anyone think the trip up there was worth the $450+ spent on it? . Not sure how kids that start on ECNL teams end up on 3rd teams behind players that play Classic 1... With multiple options now ODP appears to be more of a showcase for non ECNL type leagues. Not sure they will admit to it but that is what I could tell. Also heard and seen players playing out of their natural position from club to sure up weaker areas. It’s true-my son played right back for the first time in his life. He liked the challenge but...

It’s true-my son played right back for the first time in his life. He liked the challenge but... Did your son ever tell the coaches they might be better utilized in a more natural position? Or given reason why they were playing out of position? Yeah-coach told him to fill the gap-right back was getting beat pretty bad apparently.

Poster is correct about summer. The goal is to make it to Alabama (top 18 which is top 16 plus 2 goalies). From there, make the Region pool which provides potential for more exposure and great competition. Most players on kids team were ECNL from top clubs.

Yeah-coach told him to fill the gap-right back was getting beat pretty bad apparently. At that level seems you’d be able to fill all spots with best at that position. Basically the right back(your son) was probably the best player at their natural position as well but couldn’t play it because they needed him elsewhere due to lack of talent there and they knew he could do it. So how does that work for getting looked at or considered at next level(nationals)? When they get the nationals other defensive backs could probably dance circles around him but he doesn’t get a shot at it because the weakness of that position where he came from didn’t allow him to shine at his natural position. Very head scratching if you ask me. Agreed-I think the problem is that GA fielded 3 teams-in the past there were only 2. Also, my son was playing on another team when this occurred- when he played on the team he was selected for, he played midfield Or forward. In any event, If there were any scouts at his games, they were disguised as trees or benches b/c it was too cold😆. As far as regionals ,I believe team #1 was probably the only one being looked at. I’m not sure what he would have to do to make that squad. Play for ECNL team? Be 6 inches taller and 30 lbs heavier? I’m not really concerned. Most if not all National team players come from Europe or the MLS academies. ODP is extra practice for us. My kid will most likely go pro in computer science...

Our experience thus far with ODP...
Been at it for a couple years. They told us in the beginning that your child will likely play another position because they wind up getting roughly 80% center mids. So playing a different position was not unusual in this past event and as other posters noted, CMs should be able to do so at some level. My son played wing and right back this past weekend while normally he plays CM for club and actually fared pretty well.
TN event seemed to be well run. Good refs and no issues. Agree about the field markings (very faint) and weather was bitter cold (especially Saturday with no sun) - needed warmers if out there for two hours. But not unusual for mid-January though. Just wished we’d brought our warmers!
Also agree it would’ve been better to have knocked it out in two days.
As for the formation of teams from 1-3, it looked like a couple kids were swapped between 1 and 2 based on the SC lineups and then whoever didn’t go to SC was dropped into the 3rd team. This was unfortunate. One player in particular should’ve been on the top team hands down. He’s well known by coaches, team admin, and all the players so it was not because there hadn’t been enough practices to know. I hope this gets straightened out for future events because it’s actions like these that make players wonder if they should continue to be a part of the ODP program.

You are correct on CM players being the majority picked. They have skills which transfer to the other positions.

No Bama this year due to Covid and no colleges willing to host. Straight to Texas if you make Regionals so guess how much that’ll cost at one player per room.

Very head scratching if you ask me. Issue with our age group (08 Boys) is there’s three teams and not enough of each position. Third team has kids that are typically midfielders or forwards in club playing as center backs. My bet is 1/2 the pool are “forwards” or “play up top” so they have to move kids out of position to fill the holes. Outside of the 1st team i don’t think the 2nd or 3rd have any true center backs, probably goes for defensive mids too.
