Long paper but this was the conclusion: “ We concluded that social networks on smartphones and/orplaying video games for at least 30 min before officialsoccer matches impair the passing decision-making perfor-mance in professional soccer athletes. Thereby, coachesshould evaluate the use of social networks on smartphonesand/or playing video games before official matches insoccer athletes. Furthermore, in future studies, differentlevels of athlete’s mental fatigue should be manipulated in different sports to evaluate its effect on decision making.” Posted by Hugo Rodrigues of Sporting Club de Portugal www.researchgate.net

When we're traveling to games, I make my daughter turn off the phone to get focused and ready for the games. I definitely notice the difference from her being on the phone before games vs not. Sometimes it was subtle, sometimes was completely noticeable... Either way, I've gone with no phone at least 20 minutes before we get to the fields, then there's 45 minutes of warm ups so it's all good.

Had a kid totally suck up a state cup semi-final because she was text fighting with her boyfriend the entire drive. We didn't know until after the game. It was awful and cost the game (key midfielder / captain had worst performance of year). Take away the damn phone.

Sorry but this is complete nonsense as it pertains to video games. Texting/SnapChatting/Social Media may be a different story. There have been published studies how video games increase peripheral vision and decisions making reaction times. In fact, USA Hockey has been pushing it on players on their national team for years now. www.usahockeyintelligym.com/

The issue of timing in relation to playing I haven't seen, but who is playing games within 30-60 minutes of the game anyway. Everyone is warming up by then.
