In the land before time (when I played) saying a person is a forward ( player )and saying a person is a striker had different meaning. Today, they appear to be interchangeable...at least used that way. And I rarely hear the term striker used anymore. What’s are your thoughts?

I think it’s the opposite, I never “hear” the term forward but regularly “hear” the term striker. My burning question has always been is a winger a midfielder?

I do not think wingers are midfielders in most people's opinions. They CAN be midfielders. It all depends on how your team plays. My kids are both wingers. Both have been on teams that insist they stay high and rarely defend (in 4 3 3 formation) and on teams that ask them to defend and attack (in 4 3 3). My older child has also played wingback in a 3 5 2 and outside mid (which some call a winger) in a 4 4 2. All teams we have been on call the center forward in a 4 3 3 the striker or occasionally target. Strangely many college websites do not have all of these nuance options when you log on. The have forward but not striker or wing. Some have the number options and/or more specifics. It is interesting how little consensus there is...

That is true so far as websites labeling players as forwards and not strikers or wingers however, when you listen to commentary nobody ever says Harry Kane is a forward or Neymar is a forward. It’s strange.

It’s strange. It is interesting-a forward was always any attacking player and a striker was someone who, well, just took the last pass and struck the ball. I think the friend of Oracle is correct-it depends on the formation. I know that my son played winger on a team that only played 3 at the back so he was expected to go back and defend...like the old box to box midfielder in the center.

Just depends on the coach and their background. Striker is more European while most US coaches use the term Forward. Winger from my experience is anyone playing on the outside or wing, so an outside full back, or outside Mid, or Forward. Just playing on the Wing.
Just like the numbering system and formations it all varies depending on the coach. There’s no true uniform way of saying it.

Strikers always meant "center forward(s)" as far as I knew. In the most commonly played 4-3-3 you only have a single center forward so the striker is the 9 position. In other formations such as 4-2-3-1 you also only have one. Whereas in the older 4-4-2 both forwards are considered strikers. AFAIK.

Do stopper vs sweeper next. Then figure out what three “center” backs means. FFS
In 1984 we played (in 7” long grass) with
3 “fullbacks” 3 “midfield” 4 “forwards”
Speaking of grass... Get off my lawn

Leather boots were freakin heavy when wet. Same for the soccer balls. Plastic may be horrible for the ocean but it’s made a lot of positive changes in soccer.

I agree-heading a wet leather soccer ball would make you see stars. Also, if you didn’t knuckle your toes when you struck it, you’d feel it for a while.

Get off my lawn I did the same. 3 3 4. Interesting how times have changed. Those forwards NEVER came back to help defensively and defenders rarely crossed the center circle. Our midfielders did all the throw ins as well. So basically we midfielders had to run the whole field but the forwards and defenders played only half of it!🤣 I must say I was in awesome shape though

I played sweeper and stopper primarily. But back then our defense was diamond-shaped.

I played sweeper and stopper primarily. But back then our defense was diamond-shaped. That is what we played as well--stopper, sweeper in a diamond. That was before the offside trap was used as frequently. The use of the offside trap changed soccer to a flat 3 or flat 4.
