Had someone mention to me that US Soccer is considering going back to the Grade Year as opposed to birth year for classification. I have no idea where my friend came up with this.
He said that bc many Clubs/HS Soccer had to shut down last Spring and more (for some) that this change would essentially give each many players an "extra year".
Is that true and are they really thinking of doing this?

How does that give people an extra year? You graduate high school when you graduate. There were some programs in the country that allowed for a U20 age group for players who had their college seasons disrupted. That is adding an extra year (and was a cool thing to do). Going back to grade year (which was debated ad nauseum as it really is not grade year everywhere and still one month off in Georgia) does not give you an extra year though it does help the gap year kids (8th graders) IF they don't have a middle school team and are on a club team that does not have any training/showcases in the high school season (unlike ECNL/GA and many other teams in NPL and SCCL who do spring showcases)
If they really want to improve youth soccer they would find a way to help/encourage middle schools and high schools to have good quality teams and make sure that access to these programs was equal for all (i.e. not expensive). Subsidize school soccer and you increase access for many low income kids.

I have heard this from the GA Soccer /USYS side...nothing from US Club, MLS, USL...I suppose it’s a (bad) way for them to differentiate themselves? 🤷🏻♂️

Seems like ECNL (whose primary purpose is college recruitment) would do this anyways. If nothing else they should organize their showcases based on grad year alone.

It is an interesting phenomenon -- soccer is in a rush to have kids play up
reclassing in hoops is extremely common with kids repeating 8th grade. Very very common, especially when switching to private schools.

It is my drink of choice. I was in a store last night that had weller 12 -- the catch you had to spend $100 there to buy it for $200.....no thanks from me. But another guy was there -- bought a bottle of Woodford Reserve Very rare for $150 (not a bad price) and then also the Weller 12 for $200. I was like damn, dudes a playa and just dropped with tax $375. |
