I’ve been reading a lot of posts about the opinions of officiating lately it seems I’ve seen a large spectrum of varying thoughts. I’ve been wondering that since it’s known there’s a large referee shortage and difficultly retaining younger and newer referees, what can we do further combat that.
From experience I find the referee development in Georgia is lacking and most people would agree to a certain extent. However when the prospect is brought up about investing in referee development and funding it, everyone is against it. What I gather from some clubs is that it’s a cost that doesn’t give back and doesn’t make the club any money. It would be that one club providing the education only for that referee to utilize those resources just to work somewhere else at another club. From a few parents, I hear that with youth soccer already being expensive as it is, they simply can’t churn out more for something they probably won’t see a direct return on investment if it’s not their own child who’s refereeing.
So we all feel the effects of the different qualities of officiating so I would like to know your thoughts on how could we can further better the referee development so everyone benefits.

I haven’t refereed since the pandemic. I miss it and look forward to doing it again. My assignor was outstanding- providing experienced (paid) mentors to watch new referees and that’s not just for a week or two. I had guys watching and giving feedback, tips for most of 2 seasons. Nearly every week. I’m sure there are others who aren’t as actively involved in developing referees but my experience was really positive.

My kid re-certified last year. Spent the time.. got to ref a handful of games, and hasn't reffed since.
Now, is she supposed to re-certify AGAIN? She spent more time on the online class than on the field due to covid.. maybe a short refresher course instead of a full certification would be good. No rules changes this year anyway.

I did the same. Worked 4 games in end of feb/1st mar 2020 and that was it fir the year.. Then got pinged for Recertification at end of the year and haven’t done it. I’ll just recertify when I can start again. If I was current I could be getting games this week but I’m choosing to stay out of crowds.
