Likely was a very good game. If AU goes all MLS next year and pull out of ECNL they will miss out on good local competition. Maybe they expand this Cup tournament next year? To keep the level of play high, I am all for that, as long as they keep it to MLS-Next, ECNL and maybe National League teams only. I would also add that maybe they stream the finals and present the trophy to the winning team at a first team game at MBS at halftime or before the game... p.s. I know the plan now is for the U17 MLS clubs to go MLS only and the reintroduction of the MLS GA Cup season long tourney, but I think it would be dumb of AU to completely pull out of the ECNL

Atlanta United won all 3 games. The U14 game was competitive. Yes, I heard AU was down 0-1. I have to say I was very surprised in the outcome of the U15 and U17 games. I thought they would be closer matches and a little more even. This is especially true for the U17 game which featured the U17 NASA team vs the U16 AU team. That NASA team is a really good team, #1 in the SE ECNL division. Matter of fact someone mentioned that team beat 3 of the top 4 teams in the U17 SE ECNL division. Great win for all, I hope this becomes an annual cup that all high level clubs are party to. No gimmicks, no conjecture, earn your stripes on the field 👏👏👏 p.s. I hope in the future, it's open for the city to come and watch n support also...

Good points. Would have been great if this was played at a venue open to visitors but also to be on neutral ground. I also think that an event taking place when the Local teams are in season and not in HS soccer would make sense as well. I would expect a slightly different outcome. Not taking anything away from AU as I am sure they are excellent. The structure of this event was most certainly in their favor.

They could have had it at a different location for all to watch. AU is in season as well. Hard to coordinate local league schedule, high school schedule, special "friendlies". I would expect similar outcomes. The structure of the whole tournament or just the finals? Anyways, it was great that NASA made the finals and got a chance to play some old teammates.

I know someone who’s son is on the NASA U17 team. She said their entire back line was out with injuries, so that likely affected the game.

I know someone who’s son is on the NASA U17 team. She said their entire back line was out with injuries, so that likely affected the game. This tickled me, so was the entire front line also out with injuries too, ergo why they were only able to muster one goal? I looked up this NASA team and they scored 50 goals this season in ECNL, so they are no strangers to finding the back of the net, what say she now? Look I'm honestly not coming after you soccerallthetime I just find it disheartening when the love for our local boys is not universal. Saw a kid on the AU U14 team around town and congratulated him on his team's win. After saying thank you, he said matter of fact, "...yeah but no one else is happy we won though, but if we had lost we would not stop hearing about it..." For the record, that was from a 13 year old kid. Folks, NASA is a good team and I'm very happy all their teams made the finals but lets give love to both teams. For the most part, the boys that make up the AU teams are talented boys forged in the trenches of local soccer here in the ATL. Congratulations to both the NASA and Atlanta United teams for making the finals and all the other local teams that participated in the tourney overall...

I just passed on what I heard, I don’t really care either way. I asked what happened because last time the two teams met, it was a completely different outcome. I don’t have boys, so truly have no dog in this fight. And I certainly have nothing against AU academy.

I am very appreciative for what Atlanta United has brought to the soccer scene in the southeast from both an academy and professional standpoint. It has required that all clubs raise their level to be competitive with them. Also love that Atlanta United has programs like RDS and the Juniors program to increase training opportunities for kids that are not in the academy. But let's be honest, unless you are personally involved, it is tough to cheer for the favorite. Atlanta United has its pick of players across the southeast. It should win against the local clubs. That is why when a local team is able to beat Atlanta United it gets so much attention. No different than any other sport. If the favorite wins, no big deal but if Cinderella makes it, everyone is talking about it.

I just think it is great that these clubs played something like this. I wish they would do this on the girls side as well.

That U17 NASA team is a good team. Mad respect for those boys. Its soccer. Sometimes you have good days and bad, sometimes you are in full health and sometimes not. It just so happens the AU 05 team was at full health and brought A-game. The soccer gods on their side that day.

Congratulations to both the NASA and Atlanta United teams for making the finals and all the other local teams that participated in the tourney overall... Let’s face it. We have REALLY GOOD youth soccer teams in GA. I think the point made about the NASA U17’s was not an excuse, just like stating those boys have not practiced since January as they are all playing for their HS teams. The games ended with AU on top and this is good for SE soccer. On any given day at any age you have NASA, GSA, UFA, Concorde, (insert team name here) that all have good coaching, good teams and in some cases break out players. Events like this Unite Cup helps to highlight this. Was it organized well? Maybe, maybe not. Would it have been great to have it at a neutral location so visitors (other clubs, RDS, parents) could attend and cheer on their favorites? That would be awesome but I am sure a logistical nightmare. I am sure that no matter what, we have a great mix of talent developing here in Atlanta specifically who will go to great schools, USL clubs, MLS and beyond and it’s a wonderful thing to see how AU has helped move the community we love along. Now what would not be fun is if AU becomes so elite that they choose to play MLS academy level only and move away from the local friendlies.

Obviously Atl Utd can always pick the best 20 kids in GA and surrounding states so I would expect them to win these type events. The fact that NASA made the finals in every age group over very good programs like UFA, SSA, CF, etc. is more impressive to me than even Atl winning it. NASA U14 played Atl twice in the last couple weeks and they were close games, including one draw.

With respect to all the non-AU ECNL clubs above u-14, they haven’t played together much since their seasons all effectively ended in January so they could play high school soccer. That is a distinct advantage for AtlUtd.

Your last comment... Yeah one thinks that could be the case...maybe thats why they started the Unite Cup? It could all change tomorrow...lol maybe a new league..lol Interesting that you would bring up what's been brewing under the surface 🤭 So are my sources correct that the U19s are AU are going bye-bye and * The Reserves* are being called up? If so I have a gazillion questions, but let's start with the following for now... - How many will be on the Reserves team? - Will the current U17s be automatically moved to the Reserves? - Will the non-college bound U19s also automatically be moved to the Reserves? - Is there a contract for those on the Reserves like they do in Europe? - How much are we talking about USL rates, MLS rates or new rates? - Does that affect the first team Salary Cap? - Is this an add-on to the MLS-Next [U13, U14, U15, U16, U17, U23s]?

That is a distinct advantage for AtlUtd. Sounds like we need DA back so kids can continue to train together year round lol! Just kidding but I am not a fan of DA and the 10 month training going away (I think that will set long term development back). In all seriousness will this be one of the big differentiators of MLS vs ECNL and the eventual draw for the "elite" kids to move to a closer to year-round training environment rather than taking the break for school soccer?

Not 100% sure, but at least three MLS clubs – Portland Timbers, Philadelphia Union and Orlando City SC – are already in the process of pulling their second teams out of the USL Championship or USL League One because of the upcoming MLS Reserve League...
The Athletic’s Jeff Rueter noted that MLS’ new U-23 program is not expected to be a full “reserves” league, but more of a rehab platform for players coming back from injuries, as well as a development platform for youngsters looking to make the first team roster. Therefore, USL and its family of leagues, including USL Championship, League One and League Two, could potentially remain a significant part of the puzzle for MLS development...
