Stumbled upon this forum looking for best club for my son. He is a 2005, sophomore. Plays all forward spots and dominated state league competition last year - 30+ goals in 20 games. Plays a nice role for a 7A HS team here in Alabama. We live very close to AL-GA line. Wanting to move up a level and play for an SCCL/NPL or maybe ECNL team but can only tryout for one, maybe two, since all GA tryouts are on same days. I’m closer to the clubs south of ATL such as MOBA and AFC. Have heard SSA-Dekalb from another parent. I know it will be difficult as an “outsider” but he wants to go for it. Any advice on which teams are in need or have best coaching? Suggestions for figuring out his level and navigating the process? Thanks in advance!

Both AFC lightning and Moba seem to be good options based on location butbAFC has some really strong teams as does Moba for those ages. Some teams have left the NPL South Atlantic Division. Unless you guys plan to move, SSA Dekalb would be a mean commute. May want to look at Concorde, they just announced expansion to Columbus GA.

I agree-unless you have a camper, those seem to be your best options.

Any insight on which leagues the Concorde-Columbus RedStar teams will compete? I don’t. I talked to a parent (Red Star) last night who said the clubs are trying to figure it out. Red Star (as you may know) has some really good first teams and some ok first teams depending on age/gender. (Not a knock on them-same with all the smaller south side clubs). If anyone has any more concrete information about the Concorde/RedStar merger, I’d love to know.

I suggest you reach out to clubs to see which ones may have some flexibility i.e. training once or twice a week on weeknights along with weekends versus 3 times.

I'd start with Columbus/Concorde and work your way north being mindful of which clubs south of Atlanta end up in NPL, ECRL and SCCL. I have my doubts if SCCL will continue as most were second or third teams from ECNL clubs and it seems more and more likely those clubs will shift to ECRL play.
Making the jump to ECNL might be a stretch plus most of those clubs practice on the wrong side of Atlanta from where I assume you are in Auburn/Opelika/Columbus area. There is also BUSA/AL FC but that is likely further, in distance, from the south ATL clubs.

LaGrange (Troup) also has a branch of AFC-not sure of the level.

This has been very helpful, thank you all!! Right now I’m leaning towards figuring out the Concorde-RedStar merger and if I find anything out I’ll share it here. Thanks again!
