So many academies have tryouts on the same day in ATL. We plan to try out at 2-3 academies, north burbs. How do we tackle this? Do the kids have to attend all 3 days per academy?
Is there any proactive things to do during try outs with coaches or whomever to have my kid not land in the lower teams when we know he has the skills to be in mid-upper teams?

I've done this before with my daughter. No, you don't have to tryout all 3 nights at each club to make it known your kid is interested in playing there. But I would strongly advise you tryout on the first night at the club you want the most, so you'll need to figure that out before the week of tryouts. Definitely attend the pre-tryout camps they all usually hold the week before - gives you a chance to see some of the kids you're up against, who the coaches are and maybe get some face time with them. Do as much homework on the club, the coaches, etc. beforehand.

Then send the coach an email to introduce yourself and explain what you are doing for tryouts.

It was our experience when trying out for the top teams at the older ages, those decisions are made quickly. The top team coaches know the top players and are offering early. They arent letting a kid walk away.

If you email a coach, make sure you ask for their Venmo so you can secure your spot early. Easier and more discreet than pulling that kind of cash out of an ATM.

Fold the bill(s) and stick between your fingers just below the knuckles. Slides right out, but the recipient has to be ready for it. Otherwise it's super awkward as it drops to the ground.

Casually tie your sneaker and put it underneath, stand on it and while you talk tell the coach you think there's something wrong with the grass under your sneaker and they should probably check it out when you walk away. Hard for video to catch that if they're not looking for it!

Hard for video to catch that if they're not looking for it! I have found that this method is way too subtle for most coaches. Most coaches don't want to talk to you but will shake your hand or give you a fist pump.

honestly, if the club knows they will be let go in a month, they should be told now so they can go to these ID sessions.

Just curious for those who have inside information. When will Atl Utd be making the cuts and offers for the Academy teams? Sadly, the cuts have already begun. I know of one or two who have already left the Academy and are already making plans to jump on to another team. I have also spoken to a couple of families who have not gone public, but have been offered spots. This will be an on-going thing till all the spots are filled. Remember folks are being recruited from out of town and some teams are switching to day-time early morning practices, so continuing this journey at AU may not be in the cards...

Im sure the Unite Cup and some other games are allowing the coaches to get some final looks. Its always a crazy 45 days. Goods luck everyone.

Is Atl Utd still bringing kids in for trials or is that over by now? The full scale trials are usually for the younger lads (Juniors, Futures, U11s, U12s) and those are done now for the most part. There are still one offs occurring for the older kids also but those are more about the specific team needs...

How does the Juniors program work? I’d heard it was something a kid got scouted for and then invited. If scouting, is that just through RDS? What ages end up in this program? Or are there actual tryouts? So many questions...

When Atlanta United would recruit in boys to play for the Academy, they noticed early on that with some of these talented players, they would have to spend an inordinate amount of time working on fundamentals and cleaning up bad habits. So in an effort to "Grow the game from the ground up" the initiated the United Juniors program. To quote AU:
"...The program is designed to identify youth players and enhance development earlier than the U-12 level, and give young talent the opportunity to train under the Atlanta United Academy staff at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground. Once selected, players will remain an active player with their own youth club while receiving additional development from Atlanta United’s Academy staff..."
The reality is this is also a means for DOCs and certain coaches with a good track record to push their really good kids to AU. Most DOCs are allowed to recommend players. Being in that program, does not guarantee acceptance into the actual AU Academy at U12, but it sure doesn't hurt. At first I thought the RDS was a money grab, however, I have come to find, you do get top notch training sessions(90 mins) and a good player evaluation at the end of the sessions. I've heard of boys getting pulled into the Academy from RDS. RDS sessions (8) tend to be around $300+/- There are tryouts for RDS, however, it depends on the caliber of player(s) that shows up to your specific location. Good luck...

I think that there are currently 6 or 7 kids during the 2019 and 2020 RDS classes that became part of the academy. I sure that there are others being added in May that will increase that number.
