Wow- this is what’s wrong with this forum. Someone asked about a coach and then the usual 3-4 people pile on with their opinions which are just that “ their opinions” that are usually not backed up by the facts or even first hand experiences. So we have gone from a simple inquiry about a Coach to Sandusky and Girls Gymnastics. I don’t think anyone does not have complete disgust with those scenarios and I would hope we aren’t comparing a tough coach to sexual predators. If we are let’s change the subject title. I wonder if this forum would not be more productive if it was not Anonymous? (I’d bet many would be shocked to find out who people are are based on their posts) I was speechless after i read about the comment on sexual abuse and girls gymnastic...like the subject just changed from 0 to 100 really quick like wtf is that person you saying...lol we are talking about what it takes to play in the highest level just like how it is tough to balance life in reality like omg people chill the f**k out

think we all know that's not why helicopter parenting began in the first place. it began because parents won't let their kids fail or face adversity--they believe it's a poor reflection on them as parents. social media plays a role in that too (hey everyone look at my kid getting straight A's!). of course parents should be vigilant in watching out for people like who you mention, but crossing a line dropping it in this thread. let's all chill now and play some frisbee. I think some people have a different opinion of what helicopter parenting is than others do. Like many things it is in the eye of the beholder. Just like "failure" is in the eye of the beholder. It also began way before social media as many kids who are no longer kids but 25 years old + were helicopter patented. I agree that the references are too much for this thread but so is calling out this society as "wussificated." Let's talk about what these kids have gone through by the time they graduate high school. They have had over 20 tryouts between club and high school in soccer alone. They have been yelled at, ignored, sat on the bench for minor mistakes or because they or their parent asked for a position change or more playing time. They have been subjected to milestone testing and AP courses galore with tests and other high pressure school situations that we were not. They have ridiculous standards to reach to get into state schools that I would have ridiculed my friends for going to 30 years ago. Honestly some of these things don't apply to my kids due to their school and other situations but some other stupid pressures do apply that I did not even mention here. These kids are not wussified. These kids are placed in pressure cookers and many come out survivors but some do not. As a high achieving person myself (advanced degrees and high pressure job and training for that job) I still look at my high schooler and wonder how she is surviving this cut throat world.
