how many are allowed per team? what does the scholarship cover? do the players still pay extra for tournaments or is that included in their scholarship fee? do the players still pay extra for coach's travel for tournaments or is that included in their scholarship fee?

Scholarships are not disclosed to other players/parents at our club. So the only way to know is if that player's parents talk about it to other players parents. I'm not sure how they handle tourneys though….

hum, just made me realize that clubs that collect tourney fees with registration get to keep the refunds if any are given for rainouts vs give them back to the parents........
not sure how many clubs collect tourney fees, ours doesn't for sure, we have some teams that only do 2-3 all year, others up to 9.

Our club does not include tournament fees when they provide financial aid. It only goes towards annual fees. I don't think most parents are aware of which players on the team receive financial aid. I think typically the coach and team manager know but not in all cases (and typically don't know how much aid was received).
I can see how it would become an issue for tournaments if there were multiple players who couldn't pay. Hopefully those teams work out some kind of fundraising. The teams I've been associated with occasionally have had players on financial aid. Typically those families have been able to pay the tournament fees but sometimes it means sending their child to stay with another family for an out-of-town tournament since the hotel cost would be too much. Fortunately it's pretty easy to find another family willing to take another child along.
I hadn't realized that some clubs collect tourney fees. That would be a big job for someone to pay for all those tournaments for all those teams. As a team manager, it would be nice for me not to have to collect fees!

Our club does include tourney fees and everyone pays even if not going. We usually have had at least 1 or 2 kids bunking because of money, even gas is becoming an issue.

@strikermom - how many tourneys do yall play in during the fall? Do you still have to play coaching travel expenses or are they also included in registration fees?

Our club does include tourney fees and everyone pays even if not going.... Wow, I see the wisdom of that, but I can see some folks getting upset about it too.

well, by the letter of the law and the agreement signed everyone pays even if not going at our club. that person usually does not have to pay for coaching expenses for travel tournaments though, and depending upon the reason they are missing the tourney, might not be asked to pay tourney expenses. our club does not include tourney expenses in registration costs since their is a big difference in the number of tournaments some teams do etc. the costs of tournaments also fluctuates greatly from 6v6, 8v8, and 11v11, seems like that would be a logistic nightmare handling that etc. teams sometimes are told to do a tourney, but logistically cannot.
i assume some clubs negotiate cheaper registration fees if they are going to send 10+ teams to a tourney and cut a single check for the registration fees.
if anyone is board, would love to see the difference between fees between a club that collects tourney fees with registrations and one that doesn't.

I have no idea nor do I care. That's between the club/board and the person requesting the scholarship. My fees are what they are to the club and the treasurer is very transparent about the tournament costs per player - if another arrangement is made for someone on financial aid or scholarship, that's between them and whomever is collecting the money.
No athlete should be treated differently if their parents are receiving aid. Frankly, no one on the team needs to know any details unless they are being asked for additional funds without full disclosure. Some clubs require scholarship/financial aid families to do a certain number of volunteer hours as 'payment' for their aid - I'm fine with that.

It is easy to ask team treasurer for an accounting at end of season. In fact I encourage it, having been a treasurer in academy ages.

As a scholarship recipient......
*We get a % off the regular fees based on how much our income is (income taxes)
*Whatever % you get off you have to make it up in volunteer hours throughout the year, they keep track of them and if parents don't hold their end of it, then the next year they may not get a scholarship. Theres many opportunities all year long so there is really no excuse not to do them.
*Scholarship only includes club fees...doesn't include uniforms, travel or any kind of special training.
*We and everyone in our team HAVE to pay tournament/travel fees whether our kid plays or not in that tournament.
*The club will help as many people as it can (there is no cap)as long as the funds are there.
*A few of the parents know our kids have scholarships but they don't treat us any differently, we all help each other out when we can
