Atlanta gets lucky. Glad to see Josef score

Very very slow game. Miami was terrible in the final third.
Both teams were flat with no energy. Atlanta had way to many giveaways. Wow.
Guzan’s reaction time clearly is slowing down.
I thought both the potential handball and Guzan no call should have gone to Var for the officials review.
Stole a point there for sure.

Great to see Josef back doing what he does best, with a true striker's goal. What a relief.
Good work rate by the team, but that's about it. Disappointing performance (again after NE) against a mediocre side with issues in the backline and up top; would have been an easy win for us 3 years ago.
We should have exposed Miami on the right against Shea who eventually came off for Federico Higuain when 0-1. Crosses alone isn't cutting it. Instead they were getting in our box way too easy. This draw is a product of the Miami attackers and mostly the ref/VAR. Unbelievably scary judgment (this has happened against us too and could happen again down the road).
Opponent aside, each philosophy or each system of play has its pluses and minuses. But every system of play or format, needs the right players in the right positions and roles to work.

I only watched the first half. AU looked like they are still learning a new system. And the team is comprised of many new, young players. What I liked was the ball movement. This is definitely granular.. but they seemed to pass the ball with pace. Not just roll it over to somebody with a bunch of space (giveing the opponent time to track). But sharp fast movement. Time will tell if they figure it out and translate things into wins.
Weird that it was broadcast on ESPN3. But I’m glad that it was.

Every game I've watched -- I've seen a very lethargic atlanta united team in the 2nd half. Should be interesting to follow even if they start to master the "system", tired legs and stupid give aways will kill you all summer.

True and -with one exception- is becoming a pattern in away matches. Is it lack of fitness, lack of depth, something else? Depth becomes more of a factor as the new rules allow for more subs and teams play more games in a condense schedule with travel. Yesterday however we should already be down 3-2 at the half given the clear chances from Miles's error, and lack of proper defending in set pieces and let's not forget the PK no-call on Bello's handball. We can't hide those moments behind some good plays we had offensively and Mulraney's clear chance. 2nd half got worse, once again. This said the relative attractiveness and tactical improvement compared to the last 2 years is evident.

I think the no-call on Bello was the right call. Arm basically against the body at very close range. Not flailing out and asking for a call. I think we’d be pissed if it had been called.

With so many players committed high and up top if you don't press immediately, they'll burn you with only 3 in the back.

The (temporary?) five subs rule exacerbates this - also makes it more like college soccer. Which IMO is a shame because college soccer looks more like a track meet with a soccer ball. But I know some people find that more exciting.

yea, totally UNC womens soccer -- work your tails off and then let a sub come in and do the same. constant pressure etc.
Dirty south is basically a soccer forum, often seems like the game is watched from a tv screen vs in person. their last article discussed Josef's goal game from a tactical change by Henize --- I'd argue it came from horrible defending by Miami. How do you leave Josef wide open in the box and then not even close him down and allow him an hour to turn and take a shot. Horrible defense. Props to Josef, showing he is still dangerous in the box, now he needs more touches. One dangerous touch a game isn't enough.

Stanford men’s soccer too. I guess one big difference, is he doesn't even seem to use the 5 subs at the right time... and there is no way you can do this all season, no way. Sosa already looks like he's about to die the last 20 minutes of each game and it probably explains the mental errors he's made the past few games.

I remember Gressel looking much the same... by middle of second half - all the time. Running up and down the field all game is freaking hard.

But I know some people find that more exciting. I agree. Going from 3 to 5 subs was a huge change in the beautiful game for debatable reasons. Roster usage has many angles to view from. Track meets are exciting too but not nearly as exciting as a soccer team in rhythm. Unless it's a tournament, friendlies or overtime, I believe it should go to 4 subs (but only up to 3 in the 2nd half).
