As the kids say on Tik Tok - Story Time...
Goalies are a world in and of themselves. They tend to work out on their own, away from the rest of the team, that is until scrimmage time when strikers look for a target in goal. They practice rolling around on the ground, catching balls and emulating all sorts of situations to know how and when to react. Legend has it that, during one of these 2-a-day sessions, the perfect play that would succeed based on their collective skill-set was hatched between two goalkeepers. The rivalry of who was #1 n #2 was set aside as they tried to anticipate all the angles, counter attacks and defensive pushbacks they may run into. With the plan ironed out, the two goalies set about waiting for the perfect moment to execute play, aptly called GCS#1.8...
Fast forward to Saturday May 8th 2021, high noon with perfect weather and more importantly, the perfect conditions to execute GCS#1.8. Goalie K is between the sticks, Goalie N is on the bench. Their team is up and the game is winding down. Their opponents are pushing forward in an effort to clap back a couple of goals, leaving only two defenders behind to guard against a counter attack. K & N lock eyes and signal each other - GCS#1.8 is a go, go, go! Goalie N, sidles up to his coach and almost demands "Coach, put me in, put me in as a field player..." His Coach has faith in him but as he starts to ponder this request, he sees the fire in his eyes and miraculously agrees. With less than 5 minutes to go, Goalie N is subbed in as not only a field player, but comes in as the striker...
With all the pieces in place, Goalie K knows what to do, the next time he recovers the ball and gets to punt. For the record, the team is taught to play from the back and never punt. With less than 2 minutes to go, Goalie K picks up a dribbler of a kick and immediately punts it. Goalie N is already on his way to the designated spot to meet the punt. Goalie N has two defenders on him and is able to get in-between both. He allows the ball to bounce and shakes off one defender looking to climb his back to stop him from advancing. While that defender loses his footing, he shields the ball from the other defender, takes a couple of touches to settle and control the ball, finds his spot while the opposing goalies charges at him and rips it past the advancing goalie in a lower left shot that finds the back of the net. The crowd goes wild, the parents look on like did I just see that play, the bench erupts and clears and the cadre of coaches on the sidelines stand up and clap in unison. Goalie K, gets a well deserved assist and Goalie N, gets a GOOOOOAL!!!
