All eyes here on South Carolina's mens teams assistant hires; one down: (I'm not all knowing, but never heard of him) COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s soccer head coach Tony Annan has named Alec Purdie as his newest assistant coach to join his staff, Annan announced today. Purdie spent the past two seasons at Wofford after previously spending two years as an assistant coach at Belmont. “Alec has proven to be an outstanding assistant and has a great knowledge of the Carolinas and youth landscape across the U.S.,” Annan said. “His work ethic, passion and personality is a great fit for our program and his pedigree as a player and his understanding of the game will help our players progress rapidly. I am very excited to work with Alec.” www.soccerwire.com/news/south-carolina-mens-soccer-adds-alec-purdie-to-coaching-staff/

They say a program or a head coach is only as good as his assistants. IMO a very good hire for someone who did not earn his bones coming up through the college ranks. TA needs someone to run the ship till he becomes fully aware of the ins/outs of college soccer. Alec has succeeded and can relate at all points in a potential college soccer player's timeline. He was a HS All-American, won his State Cup, Top scorer in Indiana his senior year, before going to play at Indiana University. He was an MLS Player Combine invitee, Played for the NE Revolution and had a stint in the Swedish professional league. Add to that he's been an Assistant and ran his own College Soccer program. I just don't think there is any facet of the game he's not personally or professionally experienced with...

After losing to Presbyterian 2-1, coastal Carolina 4-1 and Clemson 5-0.

Didn't they just build a really nice soccer specific complex in the heart of town -

Because it appears to have no place for fans to sit.

Should be a top 25 program or at least a top 50 program that makes noise once in a while. Look at Kentucky. Son did small sessions at both schools a few months ago. Should be mirror images.

I haven't physically been yet, took a couple of classes at GSU ages ago, so I'm part of that "hey you're an alumni, give us money, mailing list" and that's how I found out about the new pitch/stadium/facility video et.al.

I suspect it’ll take some time for TA to put his stamp on the team. Probably a lot more than he thinks because of the NCAA rules that lead to “track meet” tactics.

They have he SEC football funding, they are close to the eastern hotbed of soccer, good coach, relatively good weather, good enough academic school. But will TA be patient enough to build it out? We all know he's angling for a pro-team, so do parents/players see he may have one foot out the door or is he able to sell them on being there long enough to see their kids through graduation. He's definitely in a conundrum for sure...

Now all of the sudden they’ve agreed to be a stepping-stone program? Not to mention the gamble being the man at a pro team can be when he can become legendary at USC. USC will surely be patient as he builds the program and they have ample resources to fund athletes now that the 9.9 scholarship allotment is meaningless.

He's definitely in a conundrum for sure... Yeah I think it will be hard for him. You know he will focus on the AU boys. (as expected) We all know AU Academy is not a team focus system that he help build but more individual focus. (real lucky if you are one of the "chosen" ones at 13/14). So many better options (my opinion) to choose from regarding schools. I know this isnt really his recruiting class so will have to see where he is at in about 3 years. Wish him the best of luck.

There are better options, but then USC should do better in the 25-40 range. Top International Business school, one of only 2 schools that can offer SEC football weekends in the fall, prime location and decent college town, and now a coach with pro connections. Should be a top choice for Atlanta area players. Will be interesting to watch.

He has always wanted to coach in the Pros, that is a very badly kept secret. He had asked to be the permanent coach for the AU2s and instead gave it to someone else who had played and coached in the EPL. Told his ceiling at AU was as Academy Director. That's when he chose to leave. Unless he's chosen to bury his dream, it's still on the table, as far as I know...

Just because you played in EPL doesnt make you a good coach. No proven track record or development in the Academy system and then moved to AU2 head spot. I question that move for sure. Not doing the greatest as HC, only 5 wins out of 19 matches. I would have selected a College coach with a proven track record. They can relate better and some USL player have came from the College soccer system This is the USA and not EPL.

True.
My guess is he’s already on the phone with the international recruiters telling them the campus is on the beach, wink wink.
I fully expect the roster to be 95% international in the next few years

ha! apparently defense isn't part of the development process.
South Carolina did also get the win over mercer (who seems to be struggling as well)

I perceived this as a slap at the previous coaching staff....who had been there for 43 years. I have to be honest, maybe it was just the speed of the video, but that looked very slow, meandering and tortuous. I honestly believe some of our local U17s/ U19s would do a much better job defending that play and counter-attacking. Again, didn't see this in real-time so gauging primarily off of the video...

Is that a practice field - and they play matches at the old Turner Field/new GSU “stadium”? Because it appears to have no place for fans to sit. I haven't physically been yet, took a couple of classes at GSU ages ago, so I'm part of that "hey you're an alumni, give us money, mailing list" and that's how I found out about the new pitch/stadium/facility video et.al. The "new" GSU soccer practice area was the former football practice and office/training facility that was given up after GSU (Center Parc) Stadium changes and renovations were completed. The soccer games are played on grass at Pantherville (was/is GSU soccer/softball/baseball facilities) in Decatur and occasionally the stadium. Eventually they will be adding a baseball/softball field stands on the old footprint of the old Fulton County Stadium ( with the blue wall).
