Roswell Santos is holding it's U14 Girls and Boys Tryouts next week: June 1-3. Girls will have at least 2 teams: DPL and SCCL P-1 (could add another SCCL-P team depending on numbers), and boys should have 3 teams: 1 SCCL-C team and 2 SCCL-P teams. In past years U14 tryouts have always been the 2nd week, but I guess most clubs changed them to the 1st week this year for some reason. I think there are a few other clubs that have U14 tryouts next week as well. |

Thank you for posting this - have a buddy with a U14 son who may get squeezed out of the team he wants to be on and really has no idea what they would do if he doesn't make it. He's not far from Roswell, too.

Just bumping this up. If you have a U14 son or daughter who is still looking for a place to play or is unsure about current offer, there are a few clubs, including Roswell Santos, doing U14 tryouts this week.

Does anyone know why the big clubs changed the tradition? Was it to get a jump on the mid-size clubs?

The change was supposed to take place last year, but COVID cancelled tryouts. I still have the email sent by GSA last year, and this is what they had to say...
II. New Tryout Timeline:
Please understand that this does not necessarily illustrate anyone’s projection for when we will actually be able to resume normal training and host in-person, traditional tryouts later this month. The tryout schedule below is likely to be a lasting change over the next few years to assist with logistics during tryouts like: field space, appropriate staffing, administrative needs, etc. In other words, this is a “big picture” type adjustment that is long overdue.
New Projected Tryout Schedule for 2020-21
Rising 08U-14U (2014-2007s): Tuesday, May 26, 2020 thru Thursday, May 28, 2020 (May 29th will be a rainout date)
Rising 15U-19U (2006-2002s): Sunday, May 31st, 2020 through Wednesday, June 2, 2020 (June 4 will be a rainout date)
Keep in mind this is from last year, so the dates are not correct, and the age group years are not correct. However, it shows they planned the move last year, and GSA mentions their reasoning for why.

The field space thing, ok…but it seems like you’d have a heck of a lot more kids u08-14 than U15-18/19. I guess clubs can do whatever they want, though.

But for most clubs, U8 through U11 don’t matter because there is pool training. No teams are being set. With the introduction of SCCL, U12 tryouts are more important. So that is 3 age groups, U12, 13, and 14 v U15, 16, 17 and 18.
