Anybody stay up and watch this one?
From ESPN “ There was also the usual venom that accompanies this rivalry. Pulisic and his teammates were showered with debris (and Giovanni Reyna being hit in the hit with an object) after his penalty conversion. There were heavy challenges, more than a few scuffles -- including a hand around the neck of midfielder Weston McKennie -- and even a fan entering the field.”

All true. It’s an ESPN instant classic as they say.

Plus they had to stop the game when the Mexico fans were doing the homophobic chant.
I went to bed after the first OT as it was so late but my child was watching it in the next room. Even with ear plugs in I heard the cheering on the TV so I went out to see what was happening. She filled me in. It was after Horvath's save. Then I watched them run the clock out.
There were scary moments. I am not impressed with McKenzie. Pulisic was quiet until about 60 minutes plus then he found ways to split defenders coming inside. We were strong on attacking set pieces. I am not sure if Horvath or Weston McKennie deserved player of the game more. Horvath came up big in a difficult situation, but McKennie was everywhere and scored the equalizer to force overtime. I think 2 Men of the Match awards were appropriate.
This team is young and if they can clean up a few things then I am sure they will do well. If not in 2022 then in 2026. One thing that I like is the depth. So if Pulisic isn't having a major impact then Reyna is. Or McKennie. Heck all 3 ended up scoring as Pulisic grew into the game. Weah had some good runs. Dest was off. I am thinking our pool is getting deeper and I like that. It will make them compete harder for spots

The Mexican fans are some the worst fans in World Soccer on the National Team level. I've witnessed it on too many occasions for this to not be true. Sorry not sorry. CONCACAF and FIFA need to just start banning their fans entry for several games till they clean up their act. That is the only thing that will change the bad behavior.

I started watching it around 60 minutes into the game, so I lucked out since the best part of the game was basically the last 60+ minutes. Gotta say, I love what W. McKennie brings to this team with his confidence and attitude. We've needed a guy like him for a while since Dempsey retired (ironically he was on the TV coverage and was hilarious, BTW). Horvath's save on the PK was huge obviously and he came up with some others too to keep us in it. Was a really big win and confidence booster for this group with 2022 WC qualifying around the corner.

resilience and perseverance to come back from down a goal twice. crazy freaking game, especially for a Sunday night at 12:30 am!! horvath might end up being the starting keeper. Sargent's days might be numbered -- I'd take zardes or Jozy over him all day. Maybe Dike fills the void. i just hate watching strikers miss chances, but acting shocked when they miss.... Where is the legenedary bobby wood when you need him......
Still this team is miles away from where it needs to be, but deserve huge credit for the win.
honestly, more eye opening to me then US's play was Mexico's. Team ain't very good. I don't understand how a team can be so "small" yet their style of play is to try to send floaters into the box all game. Tata has to be furious.

That was very enjoyable and entertaining. A few people were chiding the team for not having any “grit”, well I thought they showed a lot of that last night.

I randomly only caught the final half of the overtime period, so I saw both Pulisic's converted PK & Horvath's saved one. Following Pulisic's PK it was absolute chaos, both on the field & coming from the stands, and even more so after Horvath's save. It felt like the game was never going to end, and honestly I was getting worried that someone on the US was going to get hurt, either via a Mexican cheap shot or a projectile from the stands- even worse than what happened to Reyna. Hell, even a Mexican player got nailed in the head by one right near the end. Shameful but not surprising from them. Huge win for the USA. I recorded the replay that was on after the live match so I'll try to watch that tonight.

Great game. The US held on in the first half and then battled in the second. McKennie man of the match for me but giving him the player of the tournament and Horvath this game is OK with me too. I thought the first goal against Horvath he should have done better but after that he came up big. Unbelievable save on an unfortunate pk. That is a good win for the US. Mexico has been the top dog for a long time. It is good to at least have momentary bragging rights and hopefully build off of this with more quality wins.

Question is, for those who think the pool of talent is better: why? Are there trends?
Did DA work? Boys ECNL? USYS? Did league matter? Did going overseas work? At what age? Did having a great soccer family(parents/siblings) work?
Wish I had time to break down the players to see how they progressed, and if youth leagues mattered --at all-- in their success.

It's hard to tell, because everyone's pool of talent is better in my opinion. Other countries have ups and downs, but I think other countries have taken steps forward as well with their youth players. I don't 'think we will really tell until world cup qualifying, this team has to qualify, otherwise, the answer to every question is NO, nothing is working.
I think it's all about player identification and bringing in the right players. Juergon was too obsessed with the american in Europe while loosing sight on just bring in the top player at each position.
I don't care where they play -- if the players can't come together on the pitch to achieve a common goal. Its about the team, and making every player around you better. you can't have u8 defensive breakdowns and giveaways at this level, saw too much of that. that has to stop.

There are 3-4 players for many spots on the USMNT- the trick is finding the right combination. What often happens, especially at the youth levels of the National team, is the player with the most influence or coach who yells the loudest for their player gets the spot.

After earlier conversations on style of play, it's all I could think while watching the match. If the floaters didn't make it into the box they'd shift to the right side for the 1v1's against our weaker link (left back).

Wish I had time to break down the players to see how they progressed, and if youth leagues mattered --at all-- in their success. 100% of the roster from last night looks to have come up through the DA system with the exception of five players who played their academy ages oversees (18 of 23 DA). Also, 19 of the 23 man roster currently plays professionally overseas. The other four players play domestically in the MLS.

I'll admit, I don't watch much MLS outside of AU. Is Mark McKenzie always that bad?
Kid played on the u18, u20 and u23 national team and looked like a deer in headlights in that game. He was also called into u15 and u16 camps as well, basically this kid has been labeled as the great one since 15. Give me bello all day over him.

He is only 22 though and center backs take longer to be really strong usually.

ha, not sure why i thought he was an outside back, either way -- not impressed.
and the studio crew is an embarrassment -- they don't seem to be taking their jobs very serious, laughing and cracking jokes over one another the entire time. Very unprofessional studio crew. Kate Abdo has be frustrated as hell.

USA started the game with 3 centerbacks (brooks, McKenzie, and Ream). Both McKenzie and Ream were suspect. Really need an additional CB and to play a 4 man back line.

McKenzie was too lackadaisical at times with the ball but Ream is too slow and was getting exposed in 1v1 situations.

They are trying to go with the NBA show style (Shaq, Barkley, Kenny Smith) and if that is what it takes to get more viewers I'm fine with that. It doesn't have to be all business.

It was clunky but I cracked a smile or two and they held it together when the fan nearly ran through the set on live tv. Keeping it light has been the model since Fox NFL Sunday's launched with Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long in the 90's.

Watched the first half and fell asleep. Oops. Good thing the highlights ran 20 minutes. Looked like a nice intense match. The kind the USMNT needs to play more often to shake the low pressure mindset off the MLS guys.
Thoughts…
I’m really impressed with Weston. To me, he is the new Clint Dempsey - the scrappy heart of the team. A total wedge that gets under the other team’s skin, while endlessly working his ass off.
I had no idea Yedlin was still playing for the USMNT. He’s still dirty as hell, but absolutely useful in a rivalry match if you can avoid multiple cards. He did.
I thought Tim Ream was getting melted - no idea why MX didn’t just freight train his side of the field. I am curious if Miles Robinson can cut it at the international level.
Pulisic’s PK was sweet. Takes balls to shoot top corner and control the adrenaline in that situation.
Nice to see the best Americans (plus Sergio LOL) on the field finally.

We need 1-2 much more solid CBs (depending on if we play 2 or 3) and someone at the 9 who can simply stay active and finish the chances put their way. I haven’t seen it from any of the current crop of options to be honest. I disagree that Zardes or Jozy are solutions as they each have their own drawbacks as well. Maybe Dempsey can pull a Beasley and come back out of retirement 😂
Back to the CBs… Brooks was good but Ream and McKenzie were liabilities almost all game. Can’t help but feel very strongly that Brooks and Miles Robinson would’ve been a better tandem
