My daughter is going to tryout for ODP for the first time this year. I've tried to find as much information for her to know what to expect as I can.
A couple of questions we have that I can't find the answer to:
1. Is there anything in particular that she should or shouldn't wear? I thought we should probably stay away from club affiliation clothing, or should we? 2. She plays both keeper and center defender for her team (usually half a game at each position). Will she need to pick one of those positions at tryouts or will she be able to say she can play either?
She'll welcome any other pointers as well.
Thanks!

Good luck and hope everything goes well for your daughter
To answer your questions:
players are asked not to wear any club affiliated clothing to ODP tryouts, she will get a T shirt to tryout in, plain black shorts or any solid color is fine.
Tryout for the position that will provide the best opportunity for success, at the ODP level you typically don't see field/GK players, I've coached a few that did both for their club team but if you make ODP as a goalkeeper that's where you will play, if you are attending multiple sessions you could one night tryout in the field and one night in the goal, if you are only attending one tryout session I would ask the evaluators at your session for their advice, they typically take the GK's by themselves and put them through technical sessions and then rejoin for the games.
As for additional pointers see the post below this one "01-03 ODP process....." I posted a few suggestions in that post.
again as I said above, pick the position that gives your daughter the best opportunity for success, not sure what age group your daughter is trying out for but most ODP teams typically carry three to four goalkeepers and thirty plus field players.
Best of luck to you and hope it works out

I'm assuming your daughter is an '03. Is she?
1) You are not supposed to wear club gear. Apparently the only shorts that TopHat players own are yellow or blue Puma shorts because they all wear them, immediately identifying them as TH players.
2) If your daughter is an '03, there will be many field players who have been pre-selected through the ODP camps run in the Spring who will be able to skip the prelim tryout and go straight to the state tryout. As a keeper, they will all get a first look at the prelims and then several will be selected to compete at the state tryout on Wednesday.
She will have to pick one or the other. There are not multiple sessions and she won't get enough time at either if she tries both IMO. The best way for her to decide is to ask what does she prefer in terms of practice? Practicing small sided passing games with field players or doing goalkeeping drills in a small group. The ODP practices segregate the field players from the keepers for the first 1 1/2 hours or so and then everyone scrimmages 8v8 (for the youngest group).
One other note: Most of the field players that made it last year appeared to be midfielders and forwards, not defenders. The defenders that made the cut tended to be the quick outside full-backs who can get forward.

Thank you both for the advice.
My daughter is an '01 trying out for the first time. She started playing club soccer a couple of years ago, but didn't really know about ODP. At the end of last season, her coach suggested that she try out.
She realizes she may have a tough time making it, but wanted to go to the tryout to see the level of play and see what she needs to work on to get better so she can play with the best one day.
I think she's decided to try for keeper. She thinks she may have a better shot there. She needs to work on speed for defending against the highest level forwards (her words, not mine). Thanks again!

good experience just trying out in my mind. kids really gain an understanding of where they stand in comparison to their peers. I thought their was an obvious big difference between the quality of play between the preliminary session and the state pool for the 2003 boys.

Keeper is a hard position to try for, especially for '01 since these players have been playing ODP for a couple of years already. The '01's have some very good keepers so you want to keep that in mind, last year they had over 20 of them tryout, about 7 made it and then they cut that group to 4 or 5.
It is hard to make it as defender but not impossible, they do look for technical players for the most part and that's why its mostly fwds and mids that make it, but I know of a few defenders that have made it.
Best of luck to your daughter!

Yep, the other club players wear their own dark shorts, but there are several Nike and Adidas clubs so the club is not easily determined by the shorts like TH. Of course, by the time you are in the second year, most of the players are known to the coaches anyway.
I know of at least one 01 keeper that was cut from year one to year two, so it does happen. Tthe 01s will likely have 4 keepers again for two teams.

I know for my daughter's tryouts they wore those not just puma lol. But yes, some of the coaches already know the kids from years past
