Referee let it get out of hand by not calling the fouls he needed to call in the first half. Then he overcompensated by overcarding in the 2nd half due to that.
Josef was being kept inside the goal by that defender and he wouldn't let him out. Josef shoves him out of the way to get out and then the guy grabs him by the throat which is an immediate red card. Then all hell broke loose. A shove especially when they are impeding your way out of an area you need to get out of is not a Red. It's a yellow not a red. The throat grab is definitely a red.
If I were United I would appeal Josef's red explaining that a simple shove especially when the person is pinning him inside the goal is not a red card and should be rescinded back to a yellow only. Even if they don't win the appeal its worth a shot to get him back on the pitch next game.

I need to go back and watch the red cards!
Team has the fewest wins in the league -- with 2. They haven't won a game since May 15th.
I get it there will always be some willing to come manage this team for the $$$, but given the quick fires of FDB and Heinze, I wouldn't touch this job with a 10 foot pole, unless the money was insane. Even then, proceed with caution.
I don't understand how any High value player would sign up for a club like this not knowing who the permanent manager is. At this point I'm not sure how you can keep Boca around to make this hire. Time for change in the front office -- imagine if Golden State tore down the roster after their first championship, or the bulls traded pippen after title #1. I get it Almiron was too big for the MLS, and from what I've heard Tata knew he had to have Almiron to play like he wanted to play.
It's time for a complete change. Not sure how Blank doesn't see it - unless now the club is back to make buckets and buckets of money, so he doesn't care? It's just crazy to watch this unfold and the only one held accountable so far has been the head coach. Playing an exciting brand of soccer must be harder than it looks, because that style must also result in wins.

Not because they weren’t deserving, but because in MLS you usually have to use a weapon to get one.

Still not sure why there was red card on Josef. I get the defender getting a red card for putting his hand on Josef's throat but Josef has every right to push a guy away while the hand is on the throat. What is he supposed to do--stand there and get choked out?

What is he supposed to do--stand there and get choked out? I mean, I really thought they were both yellows…orange cards maybe… But this ref had me puzzled. He didn’t call much all night and then late in the second half everything’s a foul. I’m sure he didn’t want it to get out of hand but a bit late…

Card equity - often in those situations, the referee will give both players the same card regardless of who instigated. Exception is if one beats the snot out of the other.
I had a situation during an assessment years ago - working an adult game - hard tackle (foul) followed by an immediate shoving match. I went with cautions for both given the time in the game (early), nature of fouls until that point (light) and the level of shoving (more show than anything). The assessor commented that two yellows would have worked, or two reds, but one of each would have created a lot of animosity from one team. So the lesson was when in doubt, go with equity...

What is he supposed to do--stand there and get choked out? Bally's did a horrible job showing the whole sequence, but Josef shoved him first, but that was because he was chest to chest with Josef who was inside the goal and trying to get out of it. So Josef shoved him to get him out of the way so he could leave the goal. That is when they guy grabbed his neck, and then yes Josef has every right to shove at that point. So at most I see Josef getting a yellow for the initial shove, but honestly the other guy should have gotten a yellow there as well for standing in his way and impeding him from leaving. I wonder what VAR actually showed him because I don't think VAR even went back to the beginning of the sequence for the referee either. He probably only saw the throat choke and Josef's shove afterwards.
