Just got this email - I know we have some refs on here:
Good afternoon tournament participants,
We would like to extend an invitation to friends and family, who are certified referees, to pick up a few games this weekend at the tournament. If you are interested and have time in your schedule please contact Bryan McDermott at BgMcD@mac.com and Matt Jackson at refmatt44@gmail.com for more information.
Please let the ref assignors know which venue would be best for you (i.e. if a child or sibling is playing at PAC, please let them know that is the most convenient location for you).
PAY SCALE
U9/10 - $25/0/0 (no AR’s)
U11/12 - $30/20/20
U13/14 - $35/22/22
U15/16 - $45/30/30
U17/19 - $50/35/35
Thank You,
Tournament Staff

Sounds like they need to up the pay a bit? That isn't horrible pay wise, but yeah I would like to see the payscale for referees go up across the board. I think we can keep more referees and get more new ones if the pay was better. As it is now. I can work some OT teleworking for my work and get paid more "hourly" than refereeing pays and I don't have to deal with screaming parents/coaches. I can make about as much money in 8 hours OT at my job than I would in 5-6 games a day Saturday and Sunday in the hot sun. So yes if they upped the pay I would probably referee more even when I don't really want to. As it is now I do as much as I can, but with two kids playing select/academy soccer its hard to do a lot during the preseason for tournaments now. They are always playing in one or another all weekends August, and it is just hard to juggle refereeing and watching games the same weekend when tournaments are going on.

AFC use to pay a $100 travel fee for doing this tournament as well. And that was just for us coming from Gwinnett down.
Bryan McDermott though is probably one of the best Ref coordinators/teacher/mentors. Even is his older age and knee issues he will be out there ref’ing a dozen games plus. If he’s not then he’s out there watching and teaching those younger ones. If every club had one of him we wouldn’t have a shortage as young Refs wouldn’t be thrown to nasa parents err I mean wolves so much. 😂

Every tournament / league is begging for referees. Every third email in my inbox is a list of open games and plea for help. Seems like it's getting worse.

I ended up ARing a game Sunday due to lack of AR's at McCurry. It was my own kid's game (this was academy level), but neither coach cared and the referee was begging for help.
It went fine, but they did seem like they were missing referees here and there. These big tournaments might need to re-think having such massive events in one weekend with Referee shortages. Maybe do a girls and then a boys weekend, not sure it will help with so many clubs having their own tournament in metro Atlanta any given weekend.

The bookers will pretty much prioritize from the top down. It's the middle / lower games that get shorted the most. Not in every case, but generally speaking.

We were in the AFC Lightning tournament at Lovejoy. We had 1 game with 2 refs and they used the standard 2-ref system you would see in High School games. While it wasn't ideal, they did a good job. All other games we played had all 3 refs.

Yep I absolutely refuse to do a 2-man system if I am center and only have 1AR. I just try to stay more toward the side with no AR and stress with the 1 AR to make sure they aggressively call fouls and issues instead of sitting on their flag when they see one. I know a lot of AR's shy away from calling the foul, but in that situation they have to be more diligent with the center not always being in the best position to see everything on that AR's side.

And let the coaches know that today is not the time to pull an offside trap...

Compare what they were offering compared to AFC... soccer.sincsports.com/photos/tid/atlanta/user/PAC_Ref_Fees.pdfREFEREE FEES: Both teams (the home team and the away team) will pay the referees before each match. Please have cash in three separate envelopes, one each for the referee and 2 assistant referees. See below for fees for each age group. Your team will pay: 12U Referee $18.00 Assistant 1 $10.00 Assistant 2 $10.00 13/14U Referee $20.00 Assistant 1 $12.00 Assistant 2 $12.00 15/16U Referee $23.00 Assistant 1 $14.00 Assistant 2 $14.00 17/18/19U Referee $25.00 Assistant 1 $18.00 Assistant 2 $18.00

Double that for referee's actual pay.

Then AFC should have bumped all pay by $5 per position.

Then AFC should have bumped all pay by $5 per position. Fees need to be $50 per game (per 3 person crew) higher for 80-90min fixtures to keep and retain good refs.

You mean $50 each for Centers and AR's? They won't ever pay that for U12 and under, but I think once it gets to U13 it needs to be minimum $45-50 for centers probably $30-35 for AR's, and increase it $5 a game every age group you go up from there. Some of the young young kids I do occasionally the pay isn't really even worth it for me. I do it to help out the club and as a service to the area when I do those younger games, but it really is a waste as cheap as they pay for U9-U12 ages especially recreation.

No-I mean $50 additional per crew per game. +$20 for center +15 for each A/R for U14+. Probably won’t happen, but needs to, especially for the higher level and older games.
