Thought I would air some dirty laundry to let parents know why we left GSA. Only applies to the GSA South girls side. Speaking from personal experience only. GSA is not a "bad" club by any means. No hate is intended towards current players or parents! Get a snack this is a somewhat long read LOL.
Daughter played for GSA for about 3-4 years. Can't remember exact dates, pandemic has me losing count. We moved over to follow a coach from our old club. She played SCCL. Unfortunately she did not develop at all at GSA. She was placed at a level 4 divisions lower than her ability level. She tried out for their summer league team and did not make it-she decided to play out of her position because they did not have enough players at tryouts. We assume this is the reason she did not make the team. Very understandable. That said, we were never informed on whether she made the team or not. I emailed, asked for info and was told to wait until the next week. The next week came around. Nothing. Then the next week I emailed again. We were told she did not make it. I was OK with everything that happened up until this point! We discussed why she didn't make the team and she understood where she messed up. We moved on. She was asked to attend ECNLR practices so she went every week. It wasn't until weeks later she told me that in front of the entire team she was reprimanded by this coach (who also was coaching the SCCL summer team) that parents should never email coaches asking about whether their kid made the team. I have a serious problem with coaches discussing issues with parents with kids. Issue could have totally been avoided if there was some efficiency and organization on GSA's end. This isn't a Lifetime reality TV show, that's my kid who's just showing up to do what she loves. This was my first issue. We then learned that another player was invited to practice with the ECNLR because of connections she had with the club, and the donation section that comes up after registering with a team through Demosphere...if you get my drift. This was my second issue. The last straw (other things happened at practices but she was witness to them so I'm not including them) was when her team was playing a very hard fought match, score 0-1 at halftime. This same coach then decides to tell all of the players that no one was ready to move on to the next level, they looked terrible, etc. That was his idea of "motivating the team". They lost the game 5-0, their worst game of the season. I have no problem with tough love, and a coach expecting more from their team. My kid is competitive and lighting a fire under her butt to get her moving is sometimes the only motivation she will accept. But telling an entire team that they're not good enough to play for you (after inviting them to practice with you) gives off the impression that there is no point in trying. The team questioned every move they made the rest of the game. Looked over to this coach for approval after every pass it was a train-wreck. Later in the year she was invited to play with her age group's ECNL team. The next level after SCCL is ECNLR. She didn't want to play ECNLR at GSA. So my options were 1) keep her at a level way too low for her skill level. 2) Have her tryout for ECNL, make the team and not get very much playing time 3) Force her to be with a coach that has a reputation for humiliating and degrading players or 4) leave. Obviously, I went with option 4.
My daughter's situation was not an isolated incident. In fact, I think this is a rather tame version of what he has done. Another player we know went with option 1 and stayed at a level too low for their skill-level just to avoid being with this coach. I like that GSA wants to keep players at their club and they promote players before taking on new ones. I can't say the same for other clubs. But with a coach this bad it creates a blockage in their player pathway. My daughter had opportunities to grow at GSA, she thought she found her home. Unfortunately, a bad coach can ruin everything...
P.S. Please refrain from telling me that "not every coach is good", "my kid has dealt with worse" or "my kid had a wonderful experience at GSA". this is my family's experience. I am not attempting to speak for others.

Sad truth is some coaches know how to do one thing only… And it isn’t communicate with people. It wouldn’t surprise me if this coach just forgot to finish roster decisions, and assumed somebody else would handle it.
That’s a crappy experience and “moving on” seems justified - sadly summer leagues occur after annual commitments/contracts so it sounds like she got stuck until the following year. Bummer.

I'm honestly shocked I wasn't the person who wrote something similar. What you have said is not isolated at GSA. Their communication is terrible and their development is poor. If you are not on an ECNL team, you are just a check to them so they can keep paying all their directors.
I know you didn't mention the coach, but either I know the coach or there is more than 1 doing the same thing. In multiple years of tryouts, my daughter was never told if she made a team or not. Instead we always had to sit around and wait for an email. This was both for regular season and summer. The only chance we had to ask the coach questions is when we cornered him and essentially didn't allow him off the field...emails sent went unanswered. This was not with a single coach at the club.
It amazes me that they, and other clubs, don't look at the players & their families as customers. We are the people paying for a service and they are supposed to deliver the service. Unfortunately there aren't enough people that are willing to take their money elsewhere when clubs don't deliver, so the clubs keep doing the same thing year after year.

Hahaha same old gsa…..
Sad that at least 4 gsa coaches come to mind reading this story.
Glad you got out, though Norcross is a sinking ship as well, especially with more rumors of pulling out of Ufa and joining another sccl club swirling. Though if you have Busta as a coach now then your kid can play Rec and still love the game and get better under her. She is top notch quality.

I feel your story is one that many of us have experienced all over the Metro area.. Most clubs only care about the top teams and have failed the developing players. I have seen it firsthand on both the boys and girls side of soccer. I have seen DOC's tell loyal players they are not developing but if they leave for greener pastures they will not be welcome back. At what point does the club make any effort and share in the responsibility to help develop a player that has the ability and desire to succeed? The answer is hardly ever - lip service only goes so far .. . The bread and butter of a club lies within the sheer number of developing players but unfortunately the coaches/Doc's are way too blind (or stupid ) to see- they continually avoid issues with coaches on the lower teams and could care less about following up on the quality of practices/instruction while still charging the same fees as the elite team at the top.. To top it off every year or two more letters are added to the alphabet soup of leagues at a higher expense to us as parents. We buy into this promise of playing in a more "elite" league to play against higher level players when in fact our soccer development and wallets are shrinking.. If you don't believe me go watch some of the local tournaments .. local quality soccer for the developing player has left the building .. but it's an "elite" league that has been formed with the players snd parents in mind so it must be great?? ...

It's crazy the lack of communication that happens between the coaches. Of course when it comes to looking at my kid for an ECNL position everyone is happy to answer their phones and emails. Then the audacity to say that she won't be able to make the same connections at other clubs...UGH! I mean it got to the point that other players were reaching out to her in attempt to keep her with GSA out of fear of losing her for their SCCL P1 team...GSA is a sinking ship I believe, may take a few years but they're headed down the same road as DDY.

Exactly. It's ridiculous that nowadays you have to go outside of your club to raise your kid's level of play. At her new club she has improved tremendously. Her coach was nice enough to get her on their summer league team so she was able to develop there. Half a season with this team they have doubled what GSA ever did. Of course, I won't hold my breath for the higher level teams until I see it firsthand. It's kind of sad that on the way to games now she says "Oh I forgot I have a good team to play with.." Just goes to show that GSA really isn't focused on development at all. They get one good kid or two good kids on every team and they're expected to do it all. If the "top" players were having a bad day the whole team was having a bad day...

It happens. There are bad coaches within good and bad organizations. I do agree with others though, based on their product on the field I have seen the last few years at least on the boy's side, it seems GSA is a sinking ship especially their South (original location). I don't think adding Dacula is really going to slow the decline that much ultimately.
Looks like you found the right spot finally. A soccer experience is usually right coach and right fit. Its hard sometimes for parents and kids to find that fit, but when they do its great.

Then the DOC talks about development and promotion from within - it's utter horseshizat.

If you think your kid is better than his team then you definitely need to make sure he tries out elsewhere to see. Get a fresh pair of eyes on your kid to see. I too know a club even down on the southside that from what I see is not necessarily loyal to anyone that has stuck with them long-term and has cut long term players just to collect the best set of players for a team. I know parents at this club that use to be on the same team as my kid that have personally told me they don't think their child had improved any once they moved to this club, but the team was good. I've watched some of these kids tryout when my son wanted to tryout there as well and I did notice either a decline or a plateau in how they performed versus what they looked like when they played with my son, while (I know I have rose colored glasses on) I feel like my son has improved exponentially since him and those kids played together. The coaches know though if they collect the best group of players and win, it will drive up demand for them to pick anyone they want. I can see that from my son wanting to try out there versus staying with his current team and club. I don't blame him. Kids want to be on a winning team.

If the next Splost vote gets approved this November GSA could be in a world of hurt as a current SCCL club will be adding four full size fields at a Gwinnett park in 11 miles from Rabbit Hill. And especially if ECNL takes away their veto vote on expansion.

If a club is good enough and wants in and ECNL admin does not have some VALID reason to say no then some process should be in place to add them. Veto votes hurt UFA for years and could be hurting Tophat now. Probably hurt Santos this year.

IMO, the only reason Tophat, SSA, AFC, Roswell, and a few others are not in ECNL is because it would hurt GSA's ability to recruit top players, so Campbell vetoes their entry. On the girls side at least, there is no reason Atlanta shouldn't have it's own ECNL Conference with all the existing clubs, and those I mentioned, as opposed to being together with Florida. Sure, include Alabama FC and maybe one other Alabama club to round out the region. Florida also has enough clubs to makeup their own Conference without needing to be joined with Georgia.

Where to start...other than by saying my kid says she would never try out at GSA. GSA will stay afloat just because of their ECNL teams. They will be strong and stay strong because they win and are basically first in line to pickup cast-offs from NTH and Concorde. After the first teams, the club does not care about you. You will not get recruiting help. You are simply meat to feed the ECNL machine. Have heard this from the family of a girl who played 10th and 11th grade on SCCL club teams, was not accepted for the ECNL Composite team initially, looked to change clubs, then was added to the Composite team. She got a D2 scholarship. One player added to our ECNL-R team this year who played at GSA for at least a couple years was told by the coach in May/June that he "saw no potential" in the player. A couple other girls added by our club 2 years ago were told all week of tryouts that they would keep their ECNL spots only to be cut Thursday afternoon of tryouts. I believe replaced by new players sight unseen. They will stay around because they have the ECNL carrot to dangle in front of parents, no matter how shabbily they treat people.
And the ECNL veto needs to go. Roswell should be in ECNL-R.

"no potential" is the absolute worst statement someone can say to someone else about anything, whether it is sports, art, academics or anything. I am appalled that people speak that way to children. It is incredibly arrogant to say that as if you alone can tell the future of someone. Ugh! I am so angry to hear this kind of crap!

I was hoping with ECRL being added here in Atlanta this year, they would have been invited. Instead, the top girls teams from Roswell are now in DPL, so that might make it more difficult for them to move to the ECNL side. Of course, the biggest hurdle is the GSA veto.

I agree that some of the Roswell first teams could compete in ECNL, but I’m less certain that they have the depth for their second teams to play above SCCL. If Roswell can get beyond a veto to at least ECNL-R, and perhaps acquire or join with Ambush’s pipeline of additional young players maybe they could eventually compete with the big clubs for talent.

Their academy is growing but select isn't. I'm not wowed by ECRL... it's not beneficial unless you have ECNL too.

All this said, I don't have anything against GSA. They have their way of doing things, its not for us but it seems to work for them and they get results in ECNL. Many clubs screw over some kids/families in one way or another.

All clubs have the same problems regardless of size .. just name it, they have probably experienced it, done it and maybe still doing the dirty; GSA isn’t any different. If the club isn’t to your liking as a paying customer and/or failing to meet expectations, take your money elsewhere ..

I agree 100%. GA should have its own conference and it seems wrong that CC has a position that allows him to veto other clubs . I did not know that he could do that. How is that possible ? I just assumed a club could ask ecnl if they could join and then ecnl would make the decision as to whether or not the club had the coaching level , player pool , etc . That is like McDonalds getting a veto vote on a new drive through chain opening in the area . That is wrong

The ECNL clubs are right about where they should be in my opinion. Part of being “Elite” involves not having an excessive amount of teams in the league that will potentially water down the product. The other thing is, from reading some of the posts, folks have to start making an honest assessment about their child’s athletic ceiling. Based on my experience, if you ask most parents at damn near any level, they will tell you (with a straight face) that their kid should be playing up a level or two. The reality is, many of these kids are not putting in anywhere near the work required to get where they want to go, or they simply don’t have the athleticism needed to make a significant jump. But…..go off.
