I'll be honest -- I didn't watch the USMNT vs Costa Rica last night.
I totally forgot about it, and then saw the score when we were down 1-0 and couldn't bare to watch.
Thank goodness we pulled it out!

Watched from our first goal to the end. Actually thought we were ok. Looked confident and creative. The go ahead goal was credited as an own goal, but it was more of a botched save after a blast from Weah. Quality went down as subs came on at the end. Sure, it's Costa Rica, but a win is a win.

I watched the recent Jamaica and Panama games but forgot about this one until the end of regulation. I only saw Extra time which was a little nerve wracking.
I blame Ted Lasso - I finally broke down and picked up yet another TV subscription service. Started watching S1 on Tuesday of this week. Loving it.

If you missed it, specifically the Costa Rica goal, it looked like there was a CR player in an offside position that could have made a play on the ball. But it wasn't ruled offside due to a part of the rule that I didn't know after 30+ years of watching/playing the sport. If a defender (in this case Dest who had gone over the endline defending the initial cross) is off the field he is still counted when determining if there are two defenders behind the offensive player. I had never seen that happen.

I remember watching the original highlight, wondering why he wasn't off, because in the first replay you can't see Dest. Then in the 2nd camera angle, you can see Dest tracking back over the endline.

I missed the first half out, but saw the whole second half. The team was controlling the attacking third for probably 15 minutes or so around the Weah (own goal) strike. Seems a shame he does not get credit for that goal. Anyway, I don't think the subs changed the game that much. It was more that we were beating on the door for a while for the third goal but just couldn't quite make it happen and then the intensity slipped and THEN the subs were made. We still had several chances after that even after Musah was subbed off. He looking like he was cramping so needed to come off.
As much as I hate to put down a local guy, Bello just does not look as ready as Dest, Robinson or even Yedlin. I think he will get there but he is not playing as well as those guys and I think he was one of the reasons we did not do so well against Panama. I think having Miles out against Panama was not good though. I think Zimmerman and Miles look to be the best centerback duo.
I think there is too much rotation happening with Burhalter and these games. I have been wondering if he is getting crap from the European clubs after both Pulisic and Reyna getting injured in the last window. Maybe he is rotating out the European guys so the clubs will keep letting him have them for future windows? There are clubs that aren't letting their players go to some of these qualifiers using Covid policy as an excuse. I was glad to see Hoppe and Busio get some minutes. I feel like he can rotate the bench players some and get experience and minutes especially with the extra subs permitted compared to the days of only 3 subs. I just wish he would not make 7-10 changes for starting line up per game.
Anyone have thoughts on pushback from European clubs as a reason behind heavy rotation, light minutes for some of these players?

I think there is a lot of pushback from all the clubs…and that will only intensify as salaries go up.
This might not be popular to say, but Robinsons performance was sub par. If we had played a faster team his play would have been exposed. He looked off…especially his passes/crosses. Maybe he was tired?

A defending player who leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on the goal line or touchline for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play or until the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area. If the player left the field of play deliberately, the player must be cautioned when the ball is next out of play. And in case you wonder for an attacking player, the law states: An attacking player may step or stay off the field of play not to be involved in active play. If the player re-enters from the goal line and becomes involved in play before the next stoppage in play or the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area, the player shall be considered to be positioned on the goal line for the purposes of offside. A player who deliberately leaves the field of play and re-enters without the referee’s permission and is not penalised for offside and gains an advantage must be cautioned.
