Am I reading this correctly that so long as an ECNL player only participates in one game a day, that player can play in either an ECNL or an ECNL-R match? Or in other words, if a club’s ECNL team doesn’t have a game that day, they could legally put that team against another club’s ECNL-R team in a match? I didn’t see any restrictions on player movement down other than the one game a day limit. Am I missing something? docs.google.com/document/d/1YX_CbbGBwRvRpo1ZxPiWV8XvdZBd8966/mobilebasic

It's true. I've seen a few ECRL players play up when ECNL had some Covid issues/injuries. Never seen an ECNL player come down though.

I don't buy into relying on a patch saying that a club is bringing players down to play in games. With 2 year uniform cycles, a player could have been demoted from the prior year. Even with a new uniform, there are a myriad of reasons why a player with an ECNL patch may play in an ECRL game. For example, a player has been injured and needs to play at a lower level while returning from injury.
Both the ECNL and ECRL websites have rosters with pictures and jersey numbers. That is the way to verify if a club is playing ECNL players down at ECRL.

Pursuant to ECNL Competition Rules 2.2.1 Movement Between League Competitions, playing players in both competitions is allowed by ECNL Rules. ECNL Registered Players may participate in ECNL Club Competition and ECNL Regional League Competition with the club they are registered to , as long as they are (i) age eligible; (ii) meet all specific eligibility requirements in these Regulations; and (iii) compete in only one ECNL Competition per day.

I simply said that the rule the O.P. asked about may, in fact, be correct and noted that a girl with an ECNL patch played in our ECRL game. Frankly I don't really care that they did it if it's allowed by ECNL.

In general I agree, but apparently there is no requirement for that to be accurate. For example, the Concorde Fire 06 Premier roster shows 40 players. I know a few of them are now playing at SSA.

Honestly, the original poster (alarmist) is a bit ridiculous. The insinuation is that ECNL teams are going to play in place of their own clubs ECNL -R team when the ECNL team has a bye, I know the vast majority of folks on the forum like to bash the clubs / directors/ coaches but this is a little too much .. no? These club leaders aren’t evil ( except maybe Concorde.. just kidding ) Relax people, I will bet you will see more kids playing up then down.

Okay, that's really weird - I looked up their schedule when I posted earlier and it showed no game on Oct 16th. Now I see the game on their schedule. Oh well, must have been a former ECNL player who was dropped to ECRL this season.

On the other hand, I’ve now seen a few clubs play multiple players “down”… ECNL rostered players playing -R. One club is technically playing down a couple of steps. And while it may not be whole teams, when you have 4-5 players starting out of 11, it’s significant.

And while it may not be whole teams, when you have 4-5 players starting out of 11, it’s significant. The “alarmist” language was on purpose because as the rules read, there’s nothing to prevent it. Is there? So the idea was to get folks to take a look and comment. Nothing else. Now, the team we (as ECNL-R) played this past weekend actually had four ECNL players play down. This wasn’t based on patches but rather some of our players know these players well after playing with and against them for many years now. They know who’s on which teams and anyone can confirm on the ECNL website (and they do not have a large roster…it is up to date.) That said, I can understand one or two players moving up and down between ECNL and ECNL-R, however, four at one time moving down for a game seems a bit heavy and their bench was not sparse… It’s legal, but something to call out.

Maybe I am a bit jaded by this whole discussion because last year, my daughter's team was horrible. Without fail, every game that we lost, our coach would use the excuse that it was because the other team brought down players from ECNL. This includes using this excuse against clubs that don't have ECNL. Ultimately, that is what the entire discussion is--an excuse that coaches and parents make when the game doesn't go as hoped. You play the team wearing the opposing jersey. If the other team believes that your team is so good that the only chance it has is to bring down better players, that is a compliment to your team. Does anyone mention this when they win?

Exactly right mightydawg, that’s why people don’t really give specifics. i.e. What team, what age group. They just make ambiguous statements that are hard to fact check. I don’t think there’s too much satisfaction from teams/ coaches and players in beating a lower team with 5 top players, etc. I seldom hear on the forum that “ we lost because the other team is just better”
… ..just play the team across from you.

What club & age group did you play that brought down 4 players ? If I was going to add that info I would have. I don’t need your fact checking or anything else. It is true. Don’t care if you don’t believe it. It is discouraging to the players when this happens. If it should be a just play the team across from you, then why do other leagues (and tournaments) have limits on guest players as well as who can play down and up and under what circumstances? Play the team you originally put together and stop trying to game the system.

They still show players who not only aren't at the same club but, not even competing in the same age group as last season. ECRL should be viewed as training ground, If a player or two are dropped down due to injury or even playing time, their isn't much difference in skill level anyway. Welcome the competition.

the 2 questions --
1) can a kid play in both a ecnl and ecrl game on the same day? 2) if a kid is at a club (i.e. concorde) - that has 2 encl and ecrl teams, if they are a player on a ecrl and play with one of the encl teams, are they locked in to that team? or can they also play for the other ecnl team?

Can only play one game per day.
Once you play for one Concorde ECNL team, cannot play for the other. There cannot be any sharing of players between platinum and premier teams.

I know what you are saying but to elaborate you can only play for one ECNL team or one ECNL-RL team per day. Which also applies across all age groups so can't play for a U16 ECNL team and U17 ECNL-RL team in the same day. Agree that four players playing ECNL-RL down from ECNL seems like a lot but can't imagine it would ever be more than that. Definitely not a whole team. Soccer coaches aren't necessarily the best business folks but common sense 101 says that if you did it on a large scale and/or very often you wouldn't have a very high retention rate. Not to mention that it doesn't happen often that the ECNL and ECNL-RL teams aren't both going to be playing on the same day, especially for U15 and up where all the games have to be played in the fall. There aren't many off weekend. That said...only GSA and UFA didn't have ECNL Boys games this weekend but did play ECNL-RL games.

I suppose that depends on your definition of evil.😉 Playing down players is dumb, but not evil. I do think that some of these directors are blind though or maybe desperate for coaches that they will employ liars, abusers and people that may not be intentionally either but have zero people skills while they leave quality coaches begging for spots on higher teams, but just keep giving them lower teams.

I did notice a few ECNL players were playing ECNL-R this weekend, but they seemed to be playing up an age group. Different game than ours. And this was the only game this season in which the players noticed a handful of ECNL players playing down. And then it was a bit surprising to see there are no rules as to the number of players you can play down. Thus the post to the larger community to see if we were overlooking something in the rules.

I am not buying it. If soccerspin is that upset to the point they created a thread and as they say it’s not fair to the kids why wouldn’t they share the details and call out the team so they don’t do it again, or at least put them on “notice” that others are aware. It was probably one ( or two ) bubble kids if any who the coach wanted to get more playing time to. Us parents need to stop playing into the excuses on why they lost. Get better and beat them next time.
