“ 32 years ago today in American professional soccer:
USMNT qualify for a 24 team World Cup Final in 1990 - way before MLS.
We didn’t qualify for a 32 team World Cup Final in 2018.”

…one reason I lack patience with the current performance of the USMNT.

Not to mention the fact CONCACAF is -by far- the easiest confederation to qualify for the WC finals, based on the number of spots and relative competition.

You really think that CONCACAF at 3.5 spots is easier than Africa with 5 spots and Asia with 4.5 spots? Beginning in 2026 and the increase to 48 teams, the spots will be UEFA 16 Africa 9 Asia 8 Oceania 1 CONCACAF 6 South America 6

But CONCACAF is still pretty easy outside of Mexico and lately Canada.

I get that DR Congo may not be great, but Ivory Coast didn't qualify out of CAF.
Their potential starting 10 field players play for: Boly-Wolverhampton Bailly- Manchester United Cornet- Burnley Aurier- Villareal Seri- Fulham Kessie- Milan Traore- Sassuolo Sangare- Eindhoven Pepe- Arsenal Haller- Ajax
Tell me again who is on Panama or Costa Rica?
Or US, Mex, Canada for that matter?

Conmebol getting equal spots as concacaf is downright silly. Not when there are only 10 countries in the confederation. That means that 60% of the countries will qualify for the world cup. Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Paraguay, and Uruguay will be fighting for 2 spots.

Seems like they have the spots divided pretty fairly based on world rankings. Starting in 2026, everyone is getting in which will be a lot of watered down soccer in the group stages.

If I look at the FIFA rankings, US is #12, Mex is #14. Canada is #40 and Qatar #51. Qatar went undefeated in Concacaf Gold Cup until losing 0-1 to US, in the US. They outshot US 16-8; missed a pk; Matt Turner stood on his head; and it still took an 86' goal for US to avoid extra time. Canada will likely finish top in Concacaf World cup qualifying, are undefeated in the last 3 games v Mex(W,D)/US(D) and play home v US in 2nd match. US is also ranked ahead of SUI(13), CRO(15), WAL(19), SEN(20), PER(22), SRB(23) Tell me why am I looking at FIFA rankings again? They are ridiculous. Only good thing about 2026 is that it will show how comparatively poor/good the usual outsiders are among continental groups.

Watch CAF next month of you can and you'll understand. But I think at least 3 spots, one from each of Africa, Asia and CONCACAF should have gone to UEFA. UEFA & South America share all the WC Champions & Finalists.
