Sounds like a great hire. Wonder why he would leave SC? I read the statement but it seems a little odd still.

Great hire. Good to see Georgia going out and making a splash. Hopefully he will be a strong recruiter and get some of the girls to stay local. Think his energy is great and will help

Honestly - this hire could vault them to a top 3 team in the league.
There is No reason Florida and Georgia ain’t as good as Arkansas tenn and South Carolina.
Time to take back the sec.

I will totally agree with this comment if he keeps Coach Lane as an assistant. I believe with both of them they will bring the energy and excitement to Georgia Soccer. Excited to see what he brings in as transfers. Has 3-4 Georgia girls on the USC roster that might transfer with him

Legit hire! Look for some girls to transfer and follow him. Instant cred! Great hire. He has a BUNCH of Atlanta based players on his USC roster. Croix Bethune has had an amazing year ... she's from Concorde, a few former Hatters ...

I'm sure they will have someone there. UGA is signed up on the website to attend the GA showcase the week after in California. I don't see why they wouldn't do ECNL's also especially given the distance from campus is relatively close.

I know of two players who he has coached at USC, both sing his praises and their families do too. I hope he taps into the local market and builds the UGA Women's program into a National Powerhouse...

He grew up in Huntsville, AL. Also no other colleges athletic programs are as well funded as the ones in the SEC. Think about it. The state of California mandated that they couldnt practice for almost a year during Covid. Also I am sure UGA is paying a premium. It will be interesting how his style of play (possession) will impact the current players (most have 4 year scholly's) and the new players he begins to recruit. I wish them well until they play my daughters school

On top of being a local guy, etc., unless McAlpine is Mr. L.A., the financials weigh heavily in favor of UGA. He can make $250,000 (+ or -) in GA and live like a king w/ a huge house around Athens and 6% income tax. In L.A., he gets a small house in an ok neighborhood with 10-13% income tax. Taxes and cost of living even if paid the same salary give him a 50% pay increase.

I'm pretty sure that currently every single living former head coach of the football team (Dooley, Goff, Donnan and Richt) all still live in the area. I know Richt was gone a few years but he came back. 3 of those 4 were fired by UGA so you'd think they'd want to leave and never come back.

Could be totally wrong, but I don't expect those players to transfer to UGA, unless they already had plans to do so. I suspect these young ladies choose a school like USC for a number of reasons, not related to soccer.

04gparent fridge DunwoodySoccerDad you're all on the right tract. Add to that he felt the politics of the PAC 12, the availability of funds and the high cost of living. Add to that his childhood best friend and the former track coach of USC (Caryl Gilbert) just took the job at UGA this past year. Apparently, it was a no brainer for him to pull the trigger...👏👏👏

However, there is something about the ties that bind you home. It would be great if their parents, friends and family could make a short drive up to Athens to watch them play. The reverse is also true. Imagine being able to take a short drive home to raid the pantry, fridge whilst also getting your laundry done. Put that up against a 5+ hour flight, dealing with masks, TSA and potential body cavity search, just to have folks come watch you play. You know the coach, you know what he's about, you automatically get to be a leader on his new team. You never know, I wouldn't count it out, especially with the current ease of jumping into the transfer portal...

I was happy to be away from home when I went to college and my elder child says the same. Home is where you feel included and a part of a team regardless of how close to your parents you are. I am happy for the SEC to have this caliber of coach cone in though. Good for UGA.

But - I do want their womens soccer team to be good!
