…just heard the news that Brian Kelly is being paid almost $100M to leave ND and coach LSU pointy ball…but colleges are hurting/broke and cutting staff, right? Unbelievable.

Wait, college soccer coaches make that kind of money? I thought most college sports that aren’t football, or basketball are money losing activities that are carried by the profitable sports. So how do they pay a coach that kind of 💰?

The President of LSU makes $600k per year…the football coach makes $10M. Does the LSU football program really justify that kind of salary. I haven’t read the details of Brian Kelly’s contract-perhaps a lot of this is bonus (winning national championship) but still. Dang-I’m in the wrong profession.

That’s crizazy. Did LSU finish paying the last two coaches they fired yet?

I think you’re kidding about justifying the amount but just in case you’re not I can explain: 1. Academic money and athletic money are two separate pots of money. 2. Most power 5 Futbol programs actually give money to the athletic side. 3. LSU profits at least 2 million per Futbol home game. That doesn’t include the year TV payout from the SEC of $45.3 million (paid to athletic department not academic. 4. Futbol boosters that pay money directly to athletics department. So while we may not like it. It makes sense financially. The SEC football head coaching hiring and firing is similar to premier league Managers. If you don’t win now you are on hot seat.

Yes it was half in jest …partly because LA governor said about a year ago that due to budget constraints that there was the possibility of being no football in LA…but I hope the University has plenty of outs in case their golden boy isn’t so golden…otherwise they will have to pay a new coach and the old one too. And no, I don’t think any coach is worth a 10 year deal for $100M…especially in “amateur” athletics. But I’m sure others will disagree.

I'm thinking a lot of that money isn't actually coming from the University.
A lot of schools have their Booster organizations setup as separate non-profit companies. If this is the case at LSU, he will most likely be getting a large sum from that organization, which technically isn't the University itself. Also, a lot of big time coaches have their salaries bumped by sponsors, such as Nike, for attending events. As an example, when at FSU, Jimbo Fisher had a section of his contract covered by Nike.
So, while it is typically reported as one sum, the salary is probably multiple amounts from different entities to make the big number.

From the twitterverse:
“ The University of Georgia is about to give Kirby Smart land rights to Bartow,Collquit, and Oconee County. Two traffic free lanes on I-85 and 1-20. 14.5 million a year. A fleet of Kirby Kopters. Rights to all the chickens that go to Chick-Fil-A. One Waffle House and free Netflix!”

Here's just an example of how colleges are covering the cost of $100M coaching contracts. I am sure primary booster names of LSU and USC will surface soon as well. Years past, these Billionaires would have preferred anonymity. www.si.com/college/2021/11/17/mel-tucker-contract-extension-95-million-donors-alumni"As Michigan State reportedly prepares to make Mel Tucker one of the highest-paid coaches in the country with a 10-year, $95 million extension, a natural question has emerged from the college football world: Who's paying for this? The answer is Mat Ishbia and Steve St. Andre, according to the Detroit Free Press, two Michigan State alumni with a love for their alma mater that nears nine figures."

Damn. SI.com has really gotten obnoxious with their auto running videos and other ads that cover their content. It’s their content after all... Right? …and they can keep it. I won’t be heading back there anytime soon.
