Has anyone out there chosen to have their child take a year off from club soccer to have their kid only train and play a few events here and there as a guest player? Pros? Cons? What would be the ideal age to do it?

I wonder.. what’s the point? If the kid wants to do other things, let them.

What would be the ideal age to do it? My kid always takes spring off because his HS doesn’t have spring soccer. He does track and field and tennis. On weekends he takes private soccer lessons. I think it’s great for him physically as well as mentally. More importantly, he enjoys it.

This depends on the age and level of club play. If they play on the very top team at the highest league level, I would say no as their spot is gone likely given to either the best player on the next best team on the club or someone whose been looking to move and is a great talent. Remember as I have commented before, the players are networked too and will recruit to make their team better.
