Twitter makes it seem like the only one making poorer decisions than Carlos Bocanegra right now is Mason Greenwood. I sure hope GB gets the deal he wanted.

Can someone explain what's going on? I know Bello is being transferred to a Bundesliga club. But I did notice some odd posts on Twitter about the move, as if it was controversial from Atlanta's point of view. Not a big enough fee?

But I did notice some odd posts on Twitter about the move, as if it was controversial from Atlanta's point of view. Not a big enough fee? ..there are surely more layers to this onion but here’s what I’ve gathered. AU has gotten a handful of offers for GB, including one from Brugge in Belgium (who is a champions league club). That offer was declined despite being higher than the one that appears to be proceeding. So that’s weird but not necessarily bad because I also read speculation that GB doesn’t want to go to Brugge possibly because the Belgian fans have some serious racism problems.. including toward their own players. With a very short window to get things done it appears that AU is not in front of the deals - but chasing. When the window is about to close and you have a homegrown player that will be out of contract- potentially leaving on a free transfer.. it stinks of mismanagement. I could be totally wrong but that’s the way I’ve read it. …And Mason Greenwood’s suspended for what looks like a very serious domestic abuse situation. Or worse. And a previous instance was swept under the rug. Edit: my son just told me there is more than one Brugge in Belgium and the one who made the offer may not be the champions league club. So I may be guilty of spreading BS. Oops. Gonna leave it here for transparency.

The Greenwood situation if true, is extremely shocking, disturbing and really, really disgusting. Again, none of us know the full details, but to be clear, this isn't some one nite stand, bad drunken decision between two strangers. This is/was his girlfriend, who thankfully documented her harrowing experience over time. She recorded video, images and even has audio to back her story up. Again, if true, the audio is down right scary for any woman. It chronicles her being raped. I will not post the link to the recordings, if you're so inclined, feel free to Google it. The only good thing to take from this is that we should be cognizant of the lure and shine we give these stars. Sometimes, they are Monsters in disguise, allegedly 😓

I wish I was closer to hear offers they received over the years for Bello. should be interesting to see what homegrown gets PT now. George Campbell? Glad Bello stood his ground!
It think they missed Barco's window as well, should have moved him earlier before his value probably took a dip.

Often missed -- Bello is a success story of youth soccer in Georgia(in my opinion) -- kid played at a few clubs and carried an Ambush team to prominence before joining Atlanta United. One of those interesting products that neither GA United nor Concorde could sell DA to. My guess, is eventually he would have joined one at the recommendation of US Soccer but that is a moot point....We've discussed in the past, the lack of communication between the academy program and first team almost ruined the kid though. fortunately, they worked out the kinks and learned on the fly -- and he was their Guinee pig
What are we in now in the atlanta united academy - year 6 or 7? Crazy to think they probably have spent close to 20-30 million dollars on the academy now over the years. The bello sale barely puts a dent in that so far. What i think they get the most out of the academy is USL players at basically minimal costs and first team homegrown players at minimum cost.

Don’t forget they are also building the fan base by having the academy. To me the academy and all that surrounds it is mainly a marketing program. From that perspective I think it’s money well spent. The player development aspect is debatable.

Certainly not much success considering the $ put out. I would posit GB was not really a product of this system. He was already well on his way to being a top prospect and player. Kid played against him at a younger age. It was very evident how much better he was already.

I’d love to see GB earn a starting spot and thrive. It’s gonna be really hard. It’s dog eat dog in Europe. He can ask Sergino Dest..

Kid played against him at a younger age. It was very evident how much better he was already. As much as I believe talent is talent, and GB forged his way based on his natural talents, we should give AU some credit. Was he in the YNT pool prior to winning the 2016 National Championship with AU? I believe he got noticed after that and was invited to the U15s in 2017. Without AU would he have been given a homegrown contract at 15, would he have been given a chance to earn real minutes on a USL team, would the lazy scouts for the YNT have tried to get him on to an older aged team without his success in the USL and ultimately the USMNT. Finally, let's not forget about the complicated FIFA and UEFA footballing rules for transfer now. It's all based on a point system. I can't remember the minimums to transfer a non-citizen into the European system, but you get points playing USL minutes, MSL minutes, Nat'l Team minutes and international tournaments like the CONCACAF Champions League games. Again, not saying they "developed" him but he definitely used their platform to get to Europe for sure...

He was playing 2 age groups up with Ambush at the time and already had international opportunities. He attended the National Training Center that was held just before the first U14 National Camp, and was in every USYNT camp thereafter. He has always been a young man of character and commitment, and has fought through injuries at a young age to earn a transfer to a Bundesliga team after just turning 20 years old. We should all be proud of him and wish him the best.

Yea, if i'm not mistaken their is a story of Eristavi taking him to europe prior to joining AU, and everyone was blown away with him.

Does development stop at (insert age player leaves club A for club B)? Asking for a friend 😜
Thanks to all that helped develop GB, including himself, and I hope he kicks butt.

Wasn't AU where GB moved to outside back? Or did that happen before AU? I think I remember him being a forward prior to that. I do remember him not being very good positionally from a defensive standpoint early on with AU so they certainly should get some credit for development.
