What is your club’s policy on the “stay to play” tournaments for their players? A friend told me yesterday her club requires every player to stay at the chosen hotel, regardless if they have a second home or family to stay with at the location. This seems ridiculous and like a huge waste of money. The club has said anyone not staying at the hotel will have their playing time impacted. Who regulates this and who is benefiting and receiving the kickbacks? Do all clubs have this extreme policy?

Yea, I wouldn't stand for that. not one second. No way in hell they can make you stay at a hotel vs with a friend/family 2nd home etc.
When we travel, my first step is who do I know in that city, family/friends etc.
Most tourneys and ecnl showcases are "stay to play", but from my experience the past 2 years with covid, it's been ignored when we traveled and you can do as you please. obviously cancelation policies vary greatly as well.
I have on a few occasions seen it enforced on teams my kids have been on, but it was a threat to kick us out of the tournament. we only had 5 people booked in the team hotel. Their was nothing we could do, a family was spending a week there and was housing most of the kids. We said kick us out then, because this is the best we can do. They didn't kick us out.
our coach or club never laid down the law though. they just said, please do what you can!

That some straight up BS for your own club and coach saying playing time would be affected if you didn't stay in a stay-to-play tourney. Why do they even care if they are not the ones holding the tournament? I would assume they must be getting a kickback or a return favor type situation where that club is going to send people to Georgia to play in theirs and stay-to-play. I usually ignore stay-to-play criteria in tournament when it comes to my older kid's team, but he is not playing MLS, ECNL, NPL either. So I don't think there is any teeth these tournament can do anything about for lower level teams like SCCL and GA Soccer teams. Our coach has never cared.

Absolutely hate this rule. Our team played NL and our coach said it was a requirement of NL. We dealt with it but from what I can tell, a person can book the exact same room/hotel cheaper. This may not always be true though.

Club soccer. It’s exclusive.

It is for a 5 day event, so the costs add up quickly when you talk about peak season in FL. Also she said there are 5-6 teams from the club staying at the required hotel, so someone has to be benefiting. I didn’t know if this was just something parents accepted with top team travel at all the clubs?

Sounds like the usual, each team is required to buy so many rooms so the coaches / staff get a free room(s). If it’s not your coaching staff it’s probably someone else’s room you’re paying for that’s affiliated with the event.

We are always allowed to stay with family or friends if they are near an event. But otherwise it has to be the hotel booked for the team using the travel agency associated with the event

I used to be a team manager of U10-U13s. From my experience, it was more of individual coach's personal PREFERENCE than a club requirement to stay at a chosen hotel. This is to promote camraderie among players and parents, which most are ok with. I had coaches that strongly encourage it and others that could care less . I've always tried to book a hotel that's reasonably priced and free breakfast even if it's not through the trounament's travel agency. With regards to booking with the tournament travel agency, nobody enforces it. There are ways to get around it.

I've always found that the players generally enjoy staying in he same hotel together for the social aspect of it, so I've never had a problem with it. Also makes logistics a lot easier in terms of meals & other activities and carpooling to & from the field (including some parents being able to wait until closer to kickoff to head over if their player can ride with another parent). Sometimes the rates are more expensive than you could find them on your own, but sometimes not. I have occasionally booked a room through the team, then cancelled and used hotel points instead when it made sense, and never had an issue with it.

The rules for ECNL are a little different, from talking to a fromer ECNL manager. The club schedules all the ecnl games as well as hotel stays. The club required that all players stay at the same hotel. For showcases, it was an ECNL requirement. The rule is not as stringent for non-ECNL games and tournaments.

Yes, we found out it's the same for ECNL-R.

So true, additionally, this has always been a rule in some format or the other when you go to showcases or tournaments? I don't think it's strictly enforced and Covid may have relaxed the rules further. This is like the rule that once a tournament has been chosen, even if you can't make it or don't want to go, you still have to pay...

My older kid's coach would like for all the players to stay at the same hotel for comradery, but isn't going to get ticked off if a few can't. That being said the team and parents have never had to book at an exclusive hotel but once since he started playing and it was an utter disaster with the travel agent forgetting to even book the room for a few families even after they had already paid. So I said never again and they can just kiss my butt. I will suggest and share the hotel I am staying at when I'm staying with the rest of the parents on the team in hopes to get as many kids as possible to stay at said hotel if they can, because I agree it is fun for the kids to be able to hang out together, and really its fun for the parents as well if you have developed friendships with them over the years.

Staying in same hotel also provides convenience for team meetings. Our Coach had them before room check and before games to discuss the game plan. Its also easier for the team manager who has duties to ensure players get to locations on time.
