So -- this has happened a few times now --
bad throw ins where the ball never enters the field of play. Ref said the rules are different in high school, and the ball is turned over do the other team?
rule makes sense as it is, ball doesn't enter the field of play, its a re-throw -- and here's why it's great -- pros/kids/players always throw the ball to each other out of bounds. With the high school rule you could in theory interpret some of those "ball exchanges" as intention to throw the ball and award it to the opposing team.
Just is odd, that the high school rule is different, unless our refs were just wrong??? anyone know??

There are a few differences between HS and the real world. Throw in rule is one. Another is handling - players can protect themselves (face, tender bits) without penalty, and the emphasis is on deliberate.
Some referees may not properly adjust to the rule differences in live play - too many leagues with too many minor variations, hard to keep them straight when you do a GA game on Saturday, ECNL on Sunday, and HS on Monday.

The solution is simple.. if you’re tossing the ball to a teammate to execute the throw- toss it underhand. Or put the ball on the ground. Problem solved.

While we are on the topic of rules. What's the yellow card rule where a player has to immediately be subbed out? Can they then go back in the game?

The only reason I can think of is to avoid the AR make a judgement call on whether a ball never went in (on a throw in along the touch line). I found that many of the NFHS soccer rules which are different from the IFAB LOTG are there to avoid ref judgement calls when possible (besides emphasize safety and sportsmanship). The time management would be another example (avoid any appearance of biased game management). PS. And yes, the throw in rule is just like that. From NFHS Rule 15.1 ART. 5 ... If, on the throw-in, the ball fails to enter the field of play before it touches the ground, the ball is awarded to the opponent at the spot of the infraction.

A thought...its tougher to judge whether the ball went in when you don't have AR on the sidelines for around half of the games.
