I still havent made whatever summer soccer plans for my currently U12 boy (next year U13). Its either Futsal or SCCL summer league. Some opinions ive heard is immediately Futsal bc tight spaces, different than the usual academy set up etc. One guy who used to coach didnt recommend Futsal bc he says it doesnt translate to regular soccer. He thinks its a bunch of hype. Thoughts? I think either will be better than nothing.

For that age, I would do sccl summer league to get accustomed to a full size field, 11 v 11 and conditioning necessary for the fall.

I would go with Futsal. Quick decision making, tighter spaces and overall more touches. In 11v11 there are fewer touches on the ball. However there are some benefits of the 11v11 game such as long passes etc.

How about something totally different? Mountain biking, trail running, summer swim team, boot camp classes, spartan races / triathlons... Cross train and expand horizons. Soccer will be there in August.

In one-two years, when boys start hitting their growth spurts no amount of anything you are doing this summer will matter for your kid.

It's best to ask your boy what league he wants to play in and what kind of sports to do, maybe he wants to play futsal, well, or play soccer on a big football field. First of all, ask him, but if you ask what I would do in your place, I would advise my boy to play soccer best, not futsal, because I have been a soccer fan since childhood. I would always dream of playing on a big field with other players. Sometimes, when I read the news about football on this site zumroad.com/sport, it becomes unpleasant for me, so I could play soccer professionally given my physical data.

Aren’t the SCCL teams already set for summer?

Aren’t the SCCL teams already set for summer? Tryouts were in January. But I know some clubs allow a player to practice with them at a discounted rate and only invite you to play games if they don’t have enough players.

It helps with ball control and keeping the ball at your feet and connecting on passes and receiving the ball. Short of that yeah it probably doesn’t help. Probably a good reason they used to coach.

Soccer will be there in August. I remember asking our ECNL coach when my son was that age and this is the answer he gave me. They are so focused for 9-10 months out of the year that they really need some type of break.

Totally agree, but squeeze in one day of Futsal then 5 minutes of juggling (tennis ball, size 1 ball and size 4/5 ball) and working on skill moves at home 3 days a week for 15 minutes.

He thinks its a bunch of hype. Thoughts? I think either will be better than nothing. I would say do all of the above, including other sports n activities as suggested by soccerloafer. Let me explain. Most decent teams build out of the back. That only works if you're able to learn how to get out of tight spaces(futsal). However, I've seen many who are unable to make the transition from 7v7 & 9v9 on half the field as opposed to 11v11 on a full field. There is positioning, space, movement without the ball, lines of attack, ebb and flow of an attack/counter-attack, etc. You only get acclimated and learn from doing, so the summer SCCL may be the best and cheapest way to learn before you have to in the fall. Finally, most sports do use specific muscle groups. Diversifying sports n activities, allow you to take pressure off those muscle groups and allows you to make use of the dormant groups. Ergo, swimming, CrossFit, biking, beach volleyball. Finally, the best way to get better at this game while also having fun is to get with some friends, find some dirt and just play pick-up games, every so often. Push them to try tricks and shots they'd get in trouble for on club/HS teams. Fuel their luv of the game... Good Luck

I have 3 kids who all play high level soccer. Oldest daughter now playing in college, only wanted to play soccer 24/7 - year round. Played Futsal, summer leagues, etc. Middle child wanted her Summers / Winter breaks off to relax with her friends. Youngest wants to keep active, but play a different sport during breaks. All kids are different. There is no right answer. Enjoy this time it flies by.
