My daughter made a DiVarsity all star team. It seems like fun. Has anyone gone to this event before? What's it like?
She also made her region's all-region 1st team. What's that? Is there a game involved or is it just to highlight players? If they play do they play the 2nd team?
She's a freshman so this is all very new!

Pay to play All-Star games? Is this the way it is? I can see it now...."Congratulations on your outstanding season and selection to play in this years All-Star game. To accept your nomination, please send check to..."

To accept your nomination, please send check to..." This is not unique to sports. I got this call to pay for a plaque I earned as one of Atlanta's top doctors. They said "it will be nice to display in your office." I kindly declined. Being recognized is enough of an honor. I don't need anything else especially if you expect me to pay for it! Also there is a similar academic honor I remember from high school where they wanted to put you in some book. I can't remember the name of it. Something like America's best students or similar. Nope. I don't pay for "honors"

We never want to turn down the opportunity to play with players of that caliber

The lists appear to be a mixed bag. Some studs. Some not so much. Clearly some schools send in nominations and others don't. Some schools have 8 plus players. I believe even parents can submit names. But I think your logic of getting to play with some really high caliber players is a great one.

Oh Please hateallthesechanges.......
Complete money grab, if it was about the real allstars, at least 5 players from our team should have made it. Not sure who picks the allstars, but not a reflection of the true best players unfortunately. You would see a ton of different names on the roster if those players were picked by the real coaches of the leagues. The list of all stars are laughable +90 bucks. Not worth the risk, for what?

There are actually two games for the girls. The later game is higher level players. Just wanted to make sure you saw that.

[ For a NYT player, I kind of agree - there are much bigger spotlights. But for a freshman who made the All-Region team in probably not the strongest region and who probably doesn’t play club soccer with all the top players in the state, it’s a great opportunity! Dabe - hope your daughter has a great time!

And for the price of a training session or two. I wouldn’t mind it.

Ok, too harsh. There are some legitimately good to great people on the list, but I would put that number at about 30%. I am not sure who nominates the players to get on the all star team, but looking at the list it is missing a ton of good players that play at the highest levels of club soccer and kill it for their HS teams and are not on the list. I watched a game from last year and the final score was 8-0. During that game I saw a kid brutally slide tackle another player and could have ended his playing career and thankfully he got up. When you get less skillful players they try to use physicality in place of skill. Throw in the fact that they are in an "All Star Game" and they think it is the world cup.

I don't know club players or even HS really. My kid tells me whose names are circulating as the "best". I'm not sure how they pick. Certainly some great players missing. If I were them I would just use the all-region teams and draw from there. I assume that would be more accurate. I know they are trying to mix it up. If not Denmark and BT would be the teams playing. 8-0? Yikes. Definitely agree with you on the physicality. We had a couple games where halves lasted for 1 1/2 hours because of fouls. US Soccer is all brute force we're lacking in the creativity department...
