My 10th grade daughter ,ECRL level , is dropping club soccer this year. She loves the game but it’s become too much with school / school sports / work / change of coaches / and way too much travel . ..she will definitely play high school next spring . Suggestions for keeping skills up ? Pick up games ? TOCA ? She plans to run cross country and swim for high school so fitness is not an issue.

I would definitely suggest Toca to keep up foot skills and I applaud her for making what I’m sure was a difficult decision. Cross Country is such a fun team sport in high school! Good luck to you and your daughter!

Sorry to hear that she is quitting club but it is understandable given all of the activities and it is expensive too! She could do TOCA, private training to keep skills up. Try to see if you can find a rec team and if you are worried about the level being too low you could try a boys rec team. Their increased size and speed will make up for any skill difference if there even is any. Lots of people can't afford to play club so still play rec just because it is fun.
If she chooses not to play rec then I would suggest some small group training sessions because she could keep foot skills up on her own but the weighting of passes etc is best trained with other players too
Good luck.

First ... look up Beast Mode's IDP. Stands for individual development plan, get her current club and high school coaches to fill out the coach assessment so she knows what she needs to work on in her off season.
Depending on what high school she's at ... not playing club could be detrimental to making her high school team. Unless she's ok with JV.
She would need to dedicate as much time to Toca (2x a week 30 min sessions each I suggest ... Chris is great with technical and agility work). Toca Marietta does after hours pickup games ... ask about it ... it's sometimes invite only.

My son quit playing club in 8th grade to play football in the Fall. Still planned on playing soccer for his High School. When it came time to tryout for HS, after 1 1/2 years of not playing soccer, the foot skills came back fairly quick. What didn't was the conditioning. He made the Freshman team and then after getting his condition back somewhat was bumped up to JV.
This year after playing football in the Fall he did two months of TOCA two times a week before tryouts. Soccer conditioning was still an issue, he made the JV team. Fortunately was bumped up to Varsity full time after first game guesting with varsity. He made the All Region 2nd team. Still took a good bit of the season to get somewhat back to optimal fitness.
The foot skills can always be improved but they will come back. The conditioning though is equally important. Cross country and swimming will help fitness but not 100% soccer fitness. Tough to replicate 3 days of training per week with 1 or 2 games. I would try to work in some kind of interval sprinting or something. Good luck.

It is crazy the difference between soccer fitness and other sports. Such a difference having to compete for 80 minutes vs lets say 32 for hoops or football where its 4-10 second plays at full speed.

Interesting, around my daughter's age group/level. 06 or 07? We may be in a somewhat similar situation...but to rest due to chronic injury.

After playing football in the fall my son might as well have sat on the couch in terms of fitness. Thankfully he's decided to give up football and play club again this fall. Will be interesting to see how it impacts performance next year. Mentally, though, I think it was a good break for him.
