This must be the year of the keeper shortage.
Part of the problem is teams carrying 2 keepers.

Every team/league should be able to dual roster keepers. That way they don't have youth keepers sitting on the bench for half of a game. Two keepers should not be necessary. There are not enough to go around.

There are not enough to go around. Also, hurts the develop of keepers. More than any other position, keepers need minutes because you cannot simulate the things that they need to learn in practice. The easiest way to do it would be to share 3 keepers among 2 teams. The reason that coaches don't is out of paranoia that a keeper will get hurt during a game and the back up will not be there. The way to solve this would be to have support leagues like ECNL Regional mirror ECNL so that ECNL Regional plays first and then ECNL for that age group plays second at the same place.

The 2 06 tryouts we went to had around 8-10 keepers each. A glut even.

I’m still waiting for someone to tell me a good reason to carry two keepers other than the weak a$$ injury argument.
Reasons to carry 1
1. It kills development as previous comment said as playing time is reduced for keeper 1 and how can you expect keeper 2 to grow if they only get clean up time. Splitting time is stupid as they aren’t clones in field players play different with every keeper. 2. Usually one is inferior to the other. The coach feels guilty and puts in the weaker player they lose the game it doesn’t sit well with anyone and causes a toxic environment 3. Give players max playing time carry 1 keeper let 2nd keeper get max playing time on next lower team. It will make that team better as well. 4. Carrying 1 keeper allows bubble field players opportunity to play where they should be playing. If a keeper is on bubble there is a good reason they are on bubble 5. Have a field player than can jump in goal in case of emergency. Worst case scenario you are using them 1 game max until you can make a correction.

I think (and this comes from a dad whose daughter didn't get much playing time as a 2nd Goalie) that it is critical to have two especially at the upper levels and ages. First the injury thing is real and the idea of putting a field player in for a top level game doesn't work. The field players have been taught for years to not use your hands and the goalies have trained for hours how to do things correctly. The second part is more important because if you don't use the correct technique at the speeds of the higher levels you will either injury themselves or another player sometimes with horrible consequences. Secondly if you lose a goalie where are you going to get another. Teams are looking for goalies at tryout time and can't find them what makes anyone think they can when people can't transfer freely.

Haves and have nots. I know a club who’s U19s are flush with them. The Girls only team will have four Gks while the boys side had 8 varsity starting GKs come out for two teams.
All castaways from Big 6 clubs at an SCCL club.

Agree with this - we had 2 keepers for an ECNL-R team and they split time evenly in goal. They both were good in the field too and actually got some field time when we had a couple of girls out in an August tournament that was blazing hot (necessitating more subbing than normal). Then about halfway through the season, the #2 keeper went down with an injury and was out for the rest of fall. She's now our #1 keeper since the other keeper moved up to ECNL. Our coach is, rightfully, worried about injuries to the one keeper we have and would rather find a decent keeper to be #2 for our team.

I have seen and heard of examples going the opposite direction where one comes out with the lead only to squander it in the 2nd half. I cant imagine how that would make a keeper feel. You would think the coach would stop splitting the time if this became a recurring theme but with a limited number of games its hard to recover from one incident.

Agree - we were very lucky - very little drop-off, if any, from our #1 to our #2 goalie. I've seen those situations you mention, where the #2 goalie isn't nearly as good as the #1 and it leads to problems when the coach plays both equally.

Yes it would be great to pull from a lower team and that is what some do but then what does that do to the lower teams and if the goalie is truly a fit for the lower team then they will be overwhelmed playing a higher level. The problem with the goalie position and obviously I have a goalie but I also have a forward that has been through the whole club scene so I have seen both sides is that everyone blames the goalie saying why didn't they save that. Playing on the wrong level can hurt their confidence and cause issues through the team. As for playing at a lower level to get more time mine is doing that now was ecnl and now ecnl-r.
