I’ll start:
1- The massive disadvantage a short goalkeeper has at U13 with full size goals.
2- Coaches who simply refuse to talk with parents.
3- Coaches standing together and looking at their phones during tryouts.

I wish I could reply to this about 2 or 3 years ago when these things were fresh in my mind. Today I'm so used to the things that I was surprised about that I can't remember what they were. That said, your list is a good start.

Trying out for four days with one coach and finding out on night four you have an offer on the team you’ve been trying out for all week long but … ooops it’s gonna be a different coach.

Thinking that if you show up at a big club for tryouts you will have a spot on a team.

Still shocked that youth soccer is not a reality tv show

It is a massive disadvantage for small goal keepers when jumping into a full-sized goal at U13. Hopefully, by U14 they have learned how to protect the upper part of the goal by either growing or getting stronger and using technique.

Going back to the naïve days of U8 to what soccer really is, the things that have surprised me the most:
1. Coaches inability to be honest with children
2. No formal review process for players
3. Every player on a team not knowing exactly where they stand going into tryouts
4. The amount of ass kissing that parents do to coaches
5. Coaches having a plan and implementing that plan
6. Lack of club philosophies
7. The degree to which parents want to gossip and talk negatively about other kids on the team
8. Coaches talking with parents about players that are not their kid.

Almost in the goal. If they are on the line jumping up (with hands up) they should be able to cover gap. Its a strange technique but really worked for my son when he was in transitioning.

i've seen it all. not much would surprise me at this point. coaches and player affairs coaches and parent affairs coaches cutting kids who have been at the club since they were 6 on day 3 of a tryout at u17.
bottom line --- the lack of open communication is so disturbing.

Hmm. They should come chat with me about the drama of tryouts when your kid is ill and can't go. It was SPECIAL.

To be fair open communication in your first two scenarios probably wouldn’t help things for everyone.

Before DA ECNL SCCL NPL etc it was just CL1-5 then RPL and NL. All Promotion and relegation.. then SuperY or 3v3 in the summer. There was tons of player/parent scheming between seasons among Teams but you landed where you landed. Except small club teams got shafted on Select league placement at U13. Regardless of Academy Cup results. If Concorde added a 4th team they magically got placed higher than DDY, Inter Atlanta, Tucker and Roswell because of the golden rule among soccer clubs. The ones with the gold makes the rules. So to make a long story endless, my oldest came up in a small club whose 1st team was pretty good but they got placed in CL3 because “small club”. A short GK was the nail in the coffin. The GK was GOOD but so many shots just like that video clip. Like most small club teams they hung together one more season and scattered to destination clubs, to ECNL and DA as they got older. …but it sure is nice to have aged out and no longer experience tryouts.

- How entitled parents and kids have become - too many parents think their kid is better than they actually are - too many kids think they are better than they actually are - status chasing parents and therefore status chasing kids - parents thinking they know more about soccer than the coach - Lack of transparency from clubs and coaches

*Parents side coaching other people’s kids during the game. *Parents disrespecting referee calls especially teen refs. *Players that feel they are elite and look down upon other teammates because they feel that they are superior. *Parents that openly talk about other players or the coach (stay away from these people). *Parents that publicly and excessively berate their kids for making a mistake (sad).

Coaches picking players based on politics or past successes
Parents talking badly about clubs records out of one side of their mouths but touting the importance of development out of the other side
How many top team girls drop out their junior and senior years after living and breathing it for the previous 10 years.
