Do I have the path right here?
anyone registers—->all get looked at—->get invited to tryout—->either make it or don’t. |—>don’t get invited so don’t show up
Does everyone actually get looked at from independent coaches outside the clubs? What is the commitment if you make it?
Thanks to those who’ve fought the fight and are willing to help us newbies with your advice.

When we went through there were 2 preliminary tryouts. The first one, anyone who was interested could show up. Those chosen and those from last years pool then proceeded to tryout 2. If selected your kid was in the state pool and you practiced liked once a month usually on a Friday or a Sunday night. From the pool the coaches selected the sub regional and then regional teams. For those selected you play against other states ODPs. There is also a regional camp in the summer if selected. Theoretically you could make it all the way to National camp but regional was as far as we got.

Very positive experience with younger ages loaded with talent at U12, but talented players tend to drop out of ODP after U13 mainly due to MLS Next, ECNL or GA and heavy team commitments in those leagues. So it's a mixed bag in older ages as the level of play seems to drop. You do not have to get invited to try out for ODP but your chances are obviously better if scouted and invited. Whether invited or not, you can always try out. I remember we also had to first register to try out. The DOC and coaches promote a specific style of play in a 4-3-3 system but also allow players freedom to enjoy the game. Training is good and there is a lot of play. They keep coaching to a minimum during games by design as we were told. Some of them coach in local clubs, others independent (or we couldn't find out where they coach), some college coaches and at least one had coached at the pro level. Competition with other states is Ok but not great … Georgia, Florida and Texas seem to have (or attract) the most talent. Some neighboring states are very weak or don't have ODP at all.
The program was not expensive and the overall value good.

My kid did pre ODP. This was for 10-11 year olds and we were told that 20-21 was the first year having it. The experience was good overall. Not all kids made it. There were kids of varying skill levels, but the kids who made it seemed to be known or recommended by coaches. Its my understanding that they have since implemented a scouting network. There were enough kids to make about 4 teams and practices were sometimes only once or twice a month on Sundays mostly, but ramped up during school breaks.
You can expect travel and your kid may play half the game depending on skill. More skilled teams trained as a unit during scrimmages, which were common during practice. Typically individuals from the top team were recommended for regional, sub-regionals and/or friendlies against Atlanta United youth team. There did seem to be some preference for physically mature players.
All in all, they roster players based on perceived skill but all players had a chance to play in games vs neighboring states. Although the player pool was large, not all players opted in for travel, so in some cases there would be two teams when traveling places such as Nashville or North Carolina.

Kid played for 4 years making it to Alabama each year. He was selected to the National pool the last 2 years. He played ECNL for club. Both experiences were great with each having different experiences. Great Coach also!

Tryouts = this is how much it costs and we take all paying customers. Since Kostas took over I haven’t heard of any players getting cut from the pool.

On the girls side, this is only partially accurate. Everyone is invited to tryouts, as long as you are willing to pay...yes there is a fee for tryouts. I don't know of "independent scouting" as we have never seen it or had it eluded to outside what they publish. As for cuts, we have personally known quite a few players get cut. Granted we are now U16 and our recent experience is U13 & up, so the younger ages might be different. The worst part is the pool size increasing after tryouts. Each year we have had players added mid-season, and typically those players weren't even as good as the players which were cut at tryouts.

For those who have been through the process if you haven’t received an offer but you also haven’t been told “thanks for coming but try again next year” would you expect to go to the last night of tryouts? Don’t want to show up if there is no reason to but also don’t want to miss out if there is still a chance. Email earlier this month said selections would go into early October but kid said he heard if you don’t get an email after the previous tryout then you didn’t make it.

If they haven’t cut you yet, they’ll probably offer you a spot if you keep showing up. Ie they want your money.

If you have not received an email, you might want to contact the State Director. It may have changed but from what I remember they do not have a final selections date, not even after lists are posted sometime in October.
