Probably a rookie question, but how do you know the “level” or “tier” of the team you’re competing against? Just attended a tournament for a 2014 U-9 player and I find it difficult to assess the skill level of the competition because the team names appear to be arbitrary without the context of the other teams/names for that age group. Is there somewhere I could research this?

Clubs have different names for different level teams. After a while you just learn what they are…
For example Tophat Gold, Navy, White, Blue UFA Premier, Red, Gold, Black Concorde Black, White, Red Roswell Blue, Red Ambush Red, White, Gray, Black SSA Elite, Premier

For example, UFA Norcross Premier is rarely as strong as UFA Forsyth Premier. Tophat Milton Gold is sometimes as good as Tophat Gold from Buckhead and Tophat North Gold. SSA Blue is their main location so usually has the strongest teams, but not always. The above is for girls. Boys have some differences. You will get it with time and then as the year goes on you will start to be able to tell based on the athletes on the field and the skills they possess. Smaller clubs also have levels that vary widely between ages and genders even on the "top" team.

Is there somewhere I could research this? Youth Soccer Rankings used to be fairly accurate at ranking teams, but that seems to be gone. SincSports is far less accurate. If anyone knows of an updated, accurate reporting system, I’d love to know about it.

It’s ambiguous by design. That way every club can claim to play against and be “the best”… and take your money (while you slowly figure out the hierarchy). By the time you figure it out your kid has aged out. If you’re wealthy enough to have multiple kids in club soccer then congrats I guess.
This message board is a bit of a cheat code in this regard so soak it all in and participate.

I’m not sure if you used YouthSoccerRankings.com in the past, but it was a really good site that was shut down several months ago. It pulls from multiple resources and tracks across age levels. The guy who originally started the site has released an app that is getting close to the original.
You can check it out by searching for "Soccer Rankings" on either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. It’s green & has a soccer ball and Mark Lewis is the name of the developer. As with most it’s not 100% accurate, but the more it’s used and errors corrected the smarter it will get.

Elite Elite > Super Elite > Elite > Premier > Premier Elite Next
or something like that
so much easier when I was playing. Classic 1, 2, 3 and Athena A, B, C. Pro/rel by team. Winner stays, loser goes.

Once you hit u13, if you are not at one of Big 5, you better get there. This is consistently the top players go and play if your goal is just that. If your player is only looking to play at high school go play where its convenient travel and the fewest out of town weekends. We did the Big 5 and would not change anything. Lots of $ but lots of life skills learned and friendships made. ECNL vs. MLS Next can add a whole other discussion.

I'm curious as to why it is still called the Big 5 here in Metro Atlanta. Aren't there 7 clubs with ECNL or GAL on the girls side? I don't know the boys side as well, but I'm thinking it is similar when looking at ECNL & MLS Next???
TopHat - GAL SSA - GAL AFC Lightning - GAL Concorde - ECNL UFA - ECNL AFU - ECNL GSA - ECNL
Am I missing any clubs?

I was referencing the guys side with the Big 5. I also made a comment regarding the debate between ECNL and MLS Next can be a whole other discussion. In our kids case, they played the DA clubs and the MLS club and lost only once over 2 years 1-0 missing 5 starters that game.

Lots of $ but lots of life skills learned and friendships made. ECNL vs. MLS Next can add a whole other discussion. Encourage your child to play at the highest level they can, within a reasonable distance from your home, where they have friends, and the coach doesn't hate them. If your child is exceptional, give them the opportunities you can. High school is the pinnacle for almost everyone; they will love it and carry those memories for the rest of their lives. Do not chase ECNL or RL or Next or whatever. Life skills and friendships can be earned at SCCL-C or P2 or ECNL. This will be a shocker; all leagues provide equally meaningful games for the player. Outside of friends and family, almost no one cares about the results of games (even ECNL). The only time anyone in Georgia cares about the result of a soccer game outside of your immediate family is probably high school playoff game. College soccer is overrated for most. Over 30% of kids quit their first year, and most kids are probably going to a D2/3 with 30 other kids on the roster and little or no scholarship money. Tell your kid to join a club team in college, play intramurals, join a coed indoor team, go out on Friday/Saturday and live your life. Unless they really really love it that much... just don't make it about you. The problem with youth sports is there is always a new 8-year-old scoring 10 goals a game in rec and their parent thinks they are special, they enter the matrix. They don't know; they don't want to know. They don't want the red pill. Many of us have been there.

Somewhat related I guess but is it possible to see schedules and scores for each club/team somewhere? Specifically looking for U9 / U10. I know how to find this for tournaments but not regular matches. TIA for the help!

I know how to find this for tournaments but not regular matches. TIA for the help! Not possible. They don't post scores for those age groups because the games are technically "friendlies." There are no leagues so no standings or recorded scores. Sincsports used to track those IF the TM decided to post them. Gosport might again IF the TM posts them. In reality no one cares about those scores except maybe the parents on those teams. If your goal is to find out who are the best teams/clubs near you then your best bet is to ask here and you will get some info to digest. Then you can go watch the teams play.

No one tracks this because wins and losses at u9/u10 shouldn’t matter. Plus most clubs are moving kids up and down the various teams as players develop.
