How strictly enforced is the rule with MLS Next teams that aren’t Atlanta United that kids can’t play for their middle or high school teams?

The two MLS Next clubs that I am most familiar with have diametrically opposed views on this. One absolutely forbids it. The other actually encourages it’s players to play high school to the point that the coaches can be seen in the stands at games.

We are just getting to that point and it will play into the decision of several kids I know if they stay at our current club or look to move.

It is easy enough to find out which clubs have which positions: ask the parents on the sidelines.
I’m not being evasive, I just am convinced that it is important for each player/parent make the contacts and do the work to find out for themselves. You never know who is posting on this forum and for what reasons.

I think it's imperative you have all the facts before deciding which route to take:
Even though I think the choice to play high school should be up to the coaches and parents, I think it's necessary to state that: middle school involvement is not permitted for any reason, in MLS-Next, and playing high school ball is strictly prohibited. They only provide a waiver in the one circumstance where joining the high school soccer team at a private high school is necessary for entrance to the school or for receiving a scholarship from the institution. In the latter case, you are allowed to apply for a waiver.
With that said, I have heard of boys playing for all three MLS-Next teams(KSA/SSA/AU) and coaches playing ignorance, especially if your kid is a stud. I understand that you could be barred from returning to the MLS-Next stratosphere if caught, but I hope you have a good enough relationship with your coach to work something out.
Good Luck!!!

Was told SSA doesn’t allow it. Not surprised, RS would never allow the open skirting of the rules...

Was told SSA doesn’t allow it. From what I have heard over the years SSA is the only club that goes ape crap over someone doing it. Most others look the other way. Dumb if you asked me, and it probably limits the quality of kids they can attract, because no matter how good you are a lot of these kids want to play with their friends in High School. I imagine that is why most of the "elite" type soccer player is also getting a full ride at a private school somewhere.

Yea, I'm fairly certain we had a player who left an MLS next club specifically so he could play high school.
Looking at the southeast division is a strange league for sure SSA Wake FC AU Tormenta Lanier Queen city KSA Triangle United Hoover-Vestavia
There is no way the MLS teams are happy with this situation.

We were just in this situation. He knew going into this season with MLS Next that he possibly could not play for his middle school team. He had a problem with the "Don't ask, don't tell" motto. I could see the conflict in his voice when we discussed it that night. We are okay with him not playing for the school team. 4 days a week practice, plus the growing pains of a 13 year old boy, school work, and doing things outside off soccer, that is enough.

Personally, it's not worth breaking the rule. IF your son is in MLS Next (MLS academy or not), the risk of getting hurt playing school ball is just not worth it. I understanding missing out playing with friends. But if you're playing at the the highest level of youth soccer, then the focus should be reaching your ultimate goal. My son missed out on MS basketball and is missing out on HS sports but is very happy with his decision.

Honestly, they don't care. It gives them an opportunity to beat up on the local teams, scout and recruit the talent they don't already have in the coffers and what you may not know is there are two competitions within the MLS-Next league play. Regular MLS-Next league which includes the non-MLS teams you listed above and the more important(to AU) Pro-Player pathway. This is where AU will play the regular regional teams like Charlotte/Nashville/Miami/Orlando, twice - home/away. However, they also play most of the remaining eastern teams in Toronto, New York(2), Revs, DC United, Philly and Montreal...

Yea, the fraud of the league, They failed creating this league sorry. you shouldn't need a league to supplement your own league.
The day DA was shutdown, they should have taken the club handbook from DA, and called an emergency meeting the next day to retain a similar infrastructure. Granted clubs were already weary because of the pod groupings they had creating for the older age group, which was basically an MLS tier with NCFC....
They couldn't be trusted.
And back to high school -- DA clubs made the change years ago to stop allowing highschool because of one important reason, they were subsidizing the cost for the players. Why pay for players to play and let them go play highschool. They had justification to do so, kids payed ~2K, and then never a penny more -- club paid for travel and all the remaining expenses etc. Uniforms were also included at that price point.
Now -- clubs don't subsidize crap, they charge more - and then restrict players from playing high school. I get it, not all kids want to play high school, let them make that decision. I guess they are you want to play high school, then leave the club.

Worrying about getting hurt is no way to live. Agree. But when we joined the league and realized the time and money we have to sacrifice, we had to manage the risk. Also, there just wasn't enough time to do other things during the 10 months of soccer. Glad that people have choices.
