ATLANTA (Feb. 2, 2023) – Atlanta United 2 today announced that Steve Cooke has been named head coach. Cooke joins Atlanta with more than 30 years of coaching experience and was most recently Academy Director for the Seattle Sounders. He will report to Academy Director Matt Lawrey and be joined on staff by Atlanta United Academy U-19 head coach Jose Silva, who has been promoted to assistant coach. ATL UTD 2 will debut in MLS NEXT Pro this season. The full schedule will be announced at a later date. www.atlutd.com/2/news/atlanta-united-2-announces-steve-cooke-as-new-head-coachWhat seems odd to me is this: he reports to the Academy Director.... shouldn't it be the other way around?

Depends on how you define the 2 team. If they’re a part of the Academy and the process of development then no, the Academy Director should oversee the 2 Coach. If they’re separate like the MLS team is and only worry about winning/developing a team then I think you’re right. Just depends on how they want to look at development and whats the long term goal for players on the 2 team.

Jose Silva is by far the best coach the academy has had. I see him moving up the ranks quickly.
Still a HUGE disconnect by MLS is not allowing collegiate players in the MLS Next Pro "league".

You are spot on about Jose Silva. He is considered by many to have one of the best soccer minds. That's across all groups at AU. MLS Next Pro is considered the 3rd level of the US soccer pyramid and the goal is to develop players and with time apply to challenge USL-C or build up and have a "reserve" team for each MLS team. One bad thing is that collegiate players who graduated from the Academy cannot return in the off season to play with and train with their youth club. One good thing though is the MLS Next Pro, does not have the encumbrances' of a salary cap like the MLS. From a financial model, it will look like every other league in the world, with transfer fees et.al

I would think given their are professionals on the 2s, the academy director would answer to the 2s coach.
