Good article and not behind a paywall! Pretty much agreed with everything the guy said except that sometimes we idolize how things use to be. ODP is a great example, it wasn't the best players and had all the same issues that exist elsewhere with youth sports.

There is no question, especially for the younger age groups, DA was stale. Kids played for nothing.
The quality of soccer was better, but it did become very robotic as everyone tried to play the same way.

The quality of soccer was better, but it did become very robotic as everyone tried to play the same way. Talking boys only here: Unpopular opinion, but DA created more money for parents (kids sold overseas) than any other league... Before DA 95% of clubs packed it in and played direct to one or 2 big, fast or just simply fast forwards... 95% is not an exaggeration. Are we sure that DA failed in its mission to improve American soccer? I believe the level of soccer improved. Did DA expand too much? Yes! Was it too rigid? Yes! Did it change towards the end? Yes! I personally attended multiple showcases and playoffs. Think about this, when DA was slow to expand what was the major outcry on this forum (or the previous one)? The major issue was not enough access for kids (geographically) and late bloomers were being shut out.... There is no perfect system. I agree there are to many leagues claiming to be elite. I agree the highest levels have to many teams. I agree that MLS should limit the number of foreign players to help develop American talent. I agree the highest levels should be fully funded by the club. I threw out this point months ago, but people forget that DA was once fully funded... Imagine if MLS Next was fully funded or if ECNL was fully funded. If I am the club director at a bottom dweller MLS Next or ECNL club I can fix that by fully funding it and letting that carrot attract the best players...

Not only was DA subsidized originally or fully funded, after that went away the federation was very good at giving $$$ resources to players that needed it! this included money for travel and not just registration fees.

Mega clubs have the $$.
ECNL has money as well to help, I think Christian Lavers secret marketing company pulls in over 3 million a year.

A lot of people don’t like EW. He knows our system as a player, scout, pro manager, club team coach, as a parent of multiple kids at high level. If this is his self-nomination for anything US Soccer related, i’ll second it instantly. No question.
I am amazed he still gives a dang after the way the “system” flushed him when he legitimately put effort into running for president. MLS, Fox, everyone that can’t handle the truth.
