Anyone have moderate to expansive experience seeing the quality of play at these 2 levels? I know some factors will always vary from age group to age group, club and team by team, etc but (objectively) how much of a gap is there between these two levels?
Right now more focused on the boys side as one of our kids is about to make the jump from academy to select soccer but also have a little girl a few years away too so opinions there are also welcome.

Like you said, there are a ton of factors when it comes to relative quality. In my experience being near the end of our first year in ECNL-R (U13), we have a couple kids that are dual-rostered with SCCL top level, and a couple that are dual rostered with the ECNL team. The dual rostered kids have mainly played on the higher level teams. The SCCL kids tend to be on the bigger stature, but less-skilled side for our team. As far as the overall landscape, the higher level SCCL Club teams would probably be competitive with the bottom half of the ECNL-R teams, much like the best ECNL-R teams are capable of beating the bottom 1/3 or so of the ECNL teams.

The top 2 teams in most SCCL-C boys age groups would beat the bottom 25% of ECRL boys teams. By multiple goals. The bottom SCCL teams are 2x worse than the bottom ECRL teams. The gap in skills depends on the team/club/etc. ECNL kids are really good, and the best ECNL kids are special to watch. Most ECNL kids are not that much different that the top half of ECRL kids. SCCL clubs teams can beat ECNL teams (although not super likely). They rarely meet but I know last year they did and a local SCCL team beat one ECNL team and tied another one in a tournament. Yes I said NL not RL, it's on youtube you can watch it. Not saying it is a probable outcome but does happen. It is not uncommon around U13/14/15 to see the top 1/2/3 kids from a top SCCL team leave their old local club and get recruited to ECNL.

Another factor to consider is the addition of E64 last year. Some local clubs placed it between ECRL and SCCL. If that continues you’ll see a larger difference in skill between ECRL and SCCL going forward.

If that continues you’ll see a larger difference in skill between ECRL and SCCL going forward. The only two clubs in E64 on the girls side did not do this. At one club the E64 and SCCL top team were the same team. (No fill ins from ECNL/RL as was told early on.) UFA put their E64 team at Pinckneyville Park and did not offer another league. It was the only option and they only played a handful of games. Their SCCL C team was out of Cumming. Primarily what we saw in E64 were 3 rd level teams from most clubs. E64 is supposed to be a “composite” team of a clubs best players but that is not how the clubs have been working it. AFU joined to give the Henry County branch a league to play in and a draw for families. It didn’t happen and they had to fill slots with SCCL teams from Duluth. I’m not a fan of the E64 concept. Way too much travel for no return but they get kids listed in their system for college scouts.

My daughter has played both ECNL-RL and SCCL C. There is a skill difference just like with RL and top tier ECNL. Faster play and better foot work. But the SCCL C teams are good and the kids are committed. When you play against a non- ECNL club you will be getting their top level team but from a smaller club.
Also, some of our players are only SCCL because of health constraints and they seem to have more fun on a daily basis.
