It's my understanding that the region coaches vote Each region decides their own voting structure. It is very decentralized. Also the distribution or communicaiton of all region teams is done by the schools themselves... |

My knowledge here comes from a different sport at GHSA but every other sport I am vaguely aware of does it the same way:
Coaches from the region all get together and start off with their nominations for region player of the year and vote on that. They also then nominate players for all region teams. Once all nominations and the whys are floated to the group, they basically vote/talk about who it should be for each team. Most votes get 1st, then 2nd team. If you were nominated but received no votes, you get honorable mention.
These get together can get fairly heated when you have rival schools each trying to get the best result for their players. Lotta politicking, emails, you help me and I help you kinda stuff goes on.
Timing to do this is pretty fluid, generally right around the region tourneys, but some will wait until deeper into state to figure it out. Announcing the results is also fluid. Could be a tweet with all the info, results shared to the local paper, or no specific announcement and it's left to the schools to announce (or not) their individual accolades.

It would be great if all-region teams could lead to all-star games! Before getting to All-Star games, they would need to remove the restrictions on # of players from a school, as well as the mandate that a certain minimum are present from each school. |

At least in our region it doesn't seem to function that way, several schools were left off and half of both teams are from the top 2 schools in standings. Personally, I don't mind this at all. If my kid was chosen just because it was required to include someone from her school, it would feel like a participation trophy. I agree that if the goal is to involve every school, perhaps they should consider adding "honorable mentions" or other options. |
