I know this question has been asked before but I can't figure out the search terms to find what I was looking for.
So, what is the best plan for visiting 2 different clubs over the 3 tryout nights?
Background...Kid plays for one of the top teams, and has for years. Pretty sure the kid will have a place back on the original team (but no formal offer yet), but we are also looking at moving to another club. We have practiced a couple of times with the new club since May and have been asked back to practice but, again, no formal offer just yet. I would expect that the new club is a 50/50 shot.
So, how would you handle the 3 nights between being with the current team vs the potential new team? I don't think we could be able to hit 2 clubs on the same day.
Night 1? Night 2? Night 3? if needed
And obviously, this stuff is always fluid, we could find out tomorrow that one or the other potential offers is not as strong and that would steer us differently.
TIA

Normally home club is day 1 and then your secondary club is day 2.

Step 1--ask coach of original team where kid stands. If he has been with the team and coach for years, coach should provide an answer. Step 2--ask coach of new team where kids stands. If he has practiced with team several times, coach should be a position to tell you.
Based on those answers, make a decision based on where your kid wants to be and what is best for the kid's long term development. If you have an offer from one but it is not the top choice, use that offer to force the hand of the top choice to make a decision.
Night 1--go to kid's top choice. Afterward, ask the coach where kid stands. Night 2--go to 2nd choice. Afterward, ask the coach where kid stands Night 3--go to where you thing you have the best chance of make the team.

I think I’ve kind of bungled this… is it ever reasonable/advisable to go to home club day 1 and day 2 and potential new club day 3? This would be academy level not select.

I think typically you would not want to do that. However, if the new club is a smaller club it could work out. Our current club only has 20 plus 2012 boys at tryouts. If someone showed up for just the third day they will get noticed and seen. We are also going to one of the big clubs tryouts I'm going to guess there are about 80-100 boys there. If we were only going to go night 3 he would not be noticed. Thankfully for us the timing of them worked where we are able to go to all 3 days with both clubs.

Truthfully there are endless possibilities and situations so you may be in a situation that calls for what you described. Why are you considering a new club for tonight? Where does your child stand with their current club?

Really depends on a number of factors and situations. At Academy level certainly a possibility that there could be a spot left on night 3 on the team you want your kid to tryout for. If the club pools players at Academy then even more likely there could be a spot. When my daughter was in Academy I remember on multiple occasions (multiple years) pretty good players showing up for tryouts on the last day and being added and either put on the first or second team (they pooled players at that club when she was that age).

If day three is the most important, I would say go big or go home. That means the most important thing is to find an outfit that will help you stand out. Here are three things I would recommend you do - 1. I would recommend a bright almost neon long sleeve jersey, purple shorts, definitely go shin guards outside the socks with tennis shoes. 2. Walk your child out to the coaches and meet with them, as a parent it is important that you tell them about what club you played at as a kid and what position you were. 3. If your kid is confused, make sure you communicate. Coaches care as much about having strong, assertive, parents that can assist them in coaching during games as players. After that it is all luck. One bonus tip is if they try to send you to a field other than the top field - DO NOT GO. Demand minutes with the first team. Stay at the top field. Good luck.

We actually had a great experience with the current coach, but really don't have experience or much perspective on the coaching team for the upcoming season. The smaller club would be much closer and we believe the competitiveness of the top team for his age group would provide a good opportunity for him to contribute and further develop.

TIA What tryout bracket does your kid fall into? This current week or the older age groups next week? For the older age groups, the tryout times vary (day and evening), but based on your comment I assume that it is the same time and you can’t go to two clubs. If your kid is younger, tonight is definitely the night of decision making, so as the others stated, you need be where you have the best chance. Reach out to the coaches right now to get clarity.

Probably would’ve recommended you go to the new club first but definitely go there tonight and go right up to the coaches afterwards if they don’t seek you out first. Sounds like your son has a spot at his old club and they will want a commitment very soon. So you need to know ASAP if the new club/team has a spot for him.

Of you wait until tryouts to find out if your kid has a spot than you're more than likely too late and will be beyond stressed out come tryout week. May 1 is recruiting season. Get to practice a week or so with each club that you're family is interested in and get your child to talk to the coach and figure out where they stand. Go to one club for the 3 days of tryouts. The one that you want to be at. I know that it's a little late but this advice works for next year as well! TIA
