What an ugly loss. Our team looked terrible.
You would think with multiple years of nationals and elite play across a variety of leagues we could beat a country where we outnumber them more than 100 to 1... or to say it another way, we have more kids playing youth soccer in the US than they have people in their country!
Our defense especially, can't believe that is the best we can put on the field.
Ugh.

Bro what game did you watch? US had several great chances, but we didnt finish...
BTW, size of player pool doesnt matter ...
The size of the soccer/futbol culture in South America is what matters. In US, soccer has a cult like following (and growing). In South America (where Uruguay is located), soccer is the culture. Yes if your player pool is 100 the top 24 players will not be as good as a team/club/country that has 1000. However, once you reach 100,000 or more, the top 24 players will even out and then it because IQ and technique...
I am not surprised when US looses to countries that have decades or even 100 yrs plus of soccer culture. Ive watched all of the u20 games... Uruguay was better. Uruguay is a rich soccer history that most US fans know little about.
Proud of what the boys accomplished, we have to keep pushing the envelop.

wasn't impressive that is for sure. possession with no purpose. we tried to just keep the ball down 1-0 as if that would result in goals. Uruguay would just sit back letting the US team, try to be cool playing 1 and 2 touch with no purpose. Then when US would make a bad attempt forward, they pounced. The mistakes defensively shouldn't happen at that stage of the tournament.
I was shocked to see how many players were stagnant, with zero movement off the ball. Our defensive shape when we conceded goal 1 was beyond terrible. Its a 2 vs 5, and yet they score with ease -- nobody marks up. Really bad team defending, and if I'm not mistaken the left back seems to always be out of position. Too focused on the attacking third vs first being a defender.

We just need to keep adding bigger and faster players. That always works.

I don't think the US were up for this game. We had a very easy group and round of 16 game against NZL. Uruguay were the first real test and the US were out-coached and looked uncomfortable the entire game. How can you play with 5 in the back when you are down 0-1? The US had two more days of rest than Uruguay who were without 4 starters (injuries and suspension). It was a missed opportunity for the US.
On the soccer culture of Uruguay. Like many other South American countries, Futbol is the only sport in Uruguay. You can't compare apples to oranges when here in the US our athletes play many sports. In Uruguay, you will find soccer pitch is found in every corner of the street and simply Uruguayans have a burning desire to make it overseas. That is why for being such a small country (3.5 million less than Metro Atlanta population) they have players in the most important clubs in Europe. It also helps that you have two GIANTS (Arg and Bra) right across from you which helps you compete at the highest levels.

Until US soccer stops drinking the MLS kool aid and expands their talent search this is what we will always have. Just take a look at the one clown that was more concerned with his long hair and stupid mustache. Stop trying to be something you aren’t and play soccer.

The “too soon” and the “other sports” explanations are.. just excuses.
When your competitive pyramid is a tree, and your development system is pay to play, and your top pro level is a closed league designed for parity.. this is it.
MLS runs the US Soccer federation with a single goal: to choke out everyone else and to focus profits in the direction of MLS investors.

Edit:
Playoffs mean you can coast most of the season and still succeed. It builds complacency instead of urgency. In the pro game- Playoffs are designed so a lot of people in big markets can watch more games, for more advertising revenue. If the players aren't good... nobody watches and that plan fails.
