I just accepted a spot for my son on one of DDYSC’s academy teams. He’s no Messi, but he loves to play the game. I felt like the coaches at tryouts were doing a good job of teaching skills and getting the kids to play out of the back in the scrimmages, which was great. I see way too many teams play long ball in the younger age groups. However, after reading several of the forums, I’m starting to wonder if I should’ve given more consideration to Inter Atlanta or TYSA.
Has anyone had any positive experiences at DDYSC recently? Will I be possibly looking for a new club in 1-2 years?

It all depends on age and their goal(s) for the future. The older the players get, the very top players will migrate to the Big 5 clubs to have the competition and exposure needed for colleges especially at the D1 level.

I don't have much experience with DDYSC, other than doing rec through them as my kids were just getting started in soccer. There are not as many options on the East side of town, and you named pretty much the closest options. Once we decided to do club, we chose Inter Atlanta over DDY. It did seem to be a bit more polished and professionally run than DDY. We did three years at IAFC. If you're happy to just have your kid play and be part of a club team, it's fine. If you are competitive and want your child to be challenged and earn promotion, you'll get very frustrated there. I don't have any experience with TYSA, but I know they also lose kids to the larger clubs since they don't have access to the higher level leagues.

As kids get older, their players eventually move to usually GSA and Inter Atlanta. For TYSA it seems they navigate to Concorde, Inter Atlanta, and GSA. This takes nothing away from DDYSC and TYSA, because I have seen kids make top teams elsewhere from these clubs, they just want to play in a higher league. It seemed parents/players were happy and they just moved for that reason. I also believe that TYSA offers SCCL. If you don’t want to consider one of the Big 5 clubs in the future, Rush Union is another smaller club that competes in SCCL. Just do your research on the team, coach, and get parent feedback. You should take notes throughout the season as you play other teams. At games, watch the coach’s interaction with players, their style of play, believe it or not even observing the parent interaction from the sidelines will help you determine the type of environment that club fosters. For me, development is key at the younger ages, so if you feel that your kid will get that with this coach then just see how the season goes.

I agree with all the comments so far....if your son is having fun and has a good coach that is what matters at a young age. If he continues to grow and develop, then he will likely want to move to a bigger club for more competition. For what it is worth, a number of DDY academy players have ultimately gone on to bigger clubs and ended up playing D1 soccer...a few have even been picked up by Atlanta United academy.

As many stated on here, DDYSC has a reputation of being more of a rec club or a small academy club with most to players eventually leaving for the bigger clubs. However, if you follow Atlanta United, I understand Machop Chol came from DDYSC, which I found impressive to know that a player can make it coming from DDYSC or other smaller clubs like it.

For what it’s worth- most of the former DDY coaches are now at TYSA (coaches that are somewhat responsible for the development of the aforementioned players). Most have moved on to TYSA and a few other clubs or have stopped coaching.
Looks like the OP has already accepted the spot at DDY but I would give TYSA or Inter a look after Fall- they seem to have a more accomplished coaching staff. (Plus Inter has MLS Next at some ages.)
And come u12, look to move to one of the Big 5 if your players wants more of a challenge.

We were at TYSA for 2 years in academy and select, positive experience, good coaching. My son moved into a more competitive league - but overall enjoyed our time there.
