I hope a) they do it and b) we see explosive growth
…into an actual pyramid with a foundation which is far more important than the top. MLS has been trying to prevent having a functional pyramid for years.

rifle said “…MLS has been trying to prevent having a functional pyramid for years. [/quote] “Promotion and relegation is the model used by soccer leagues in nearly every country throughout the world, including England, Spain, Germany, Brazil and Argentina, but the idea has been kept at arm's length by MLS commissioner Don Garber.” I think this statement says it all. What I find most disappointing is that it’s dang near impossible to move up to MLS from USL because of the rules in place. It’s easier for MLS to go to Conmebol and get a player than it is for a USL player to get a shot in MLS.

I think this is huge, and you will see local teams scrambling to get into the USL pyramid.

I really love what the USL is doing... I know this post is about MLS, but USL is also working to create tiers in Womens Soccer as well. I am super impressed by this. I hope it works out. This would be a major needed disruption in the American soccer structure...
If pro/rel is approved AND USL gets top tier women's league that would be fire!!!

I hope that the USL is successful with this. The biggest problem for MLS is that everything (Clubs, players, etc,) is owned by MLS and each owner just owns a portion of the MLS entity and the right to operate the team. Cannot have promotion/relegation with such a structure. If USL can find success, may force MLS to find a way to spin off the teams into individual entities, which would eventually pave the way for pro/rel.

Building MLS on the NFL model is fine if your objective is mediocrity and some profit (mostly from real estate development).
NFL’s runaway profitability and success comes from being (very nearly) the only league for the best players in a sport that just happens to stop constantly so they can maximize TV revenue. Monetize and maximize!!
Playoffs in NFL (and NBA and MLB) are designed to maximize the chance for NYC and LA - teams with big TV markets - for explosive league profits through that sweet TV revenue.
BUT - If your franchises are full of average players and an handful of better than average players.. and you can’t even run a commercial, how the hell is soccer going to maximize TV profits? Disregard the fact that it has serious viewership problems and “fans” who openly admit they will abandon their team if they should fall out of the first division.
Having said that, the Messi bump will be very strong. But MLS is not a retirement league.
I really would love to see USL trigger a soccer explosion through this plan.
