Nowhere unless you become one of the club's NPL, ECNL, ECNL-R, NAL, (insert alphabet supposed higher league here)...

Not to hijack this thread, but where does the National Academy League (NAL) fall in the league hierarchy? Are most big clubs putting their 2nd or 3rd team in the NAL? Just when I thought I was current on all of the leagues… 😀

Just when I thought I was current on all of the leagues… 😀 I think NAL is being talked about as better than ECNL. I know as a referee looking at the pay scale it pays higher than ECNL games at most clubs I'm signed up for to referee. So I would say probably 2nd or 3rd depending on if that club has MLS or not and whether they consider ECNL better than NAL or not. For some that have neither it would be their 1st team. This is on the boy's side. The girl's side is a whole other can of worms. I'm not even sure if there is NAL on the girl's side? I mean girls already have GAL, DPL, ECNL, etc... Is GAL the same as NAL? You got me confused now!

NAL is sold as the second level for clubs that utilize MLS Next marketing. In essence, MLS Next 2.

Some clubs are putting their third teams there, or first teams if it’s a small club.

I did see that they did an SCCL Cup over Labor Day weekend and clubs announced the champion qualified for Nationals. However, you can apply for the tournament without having won SCCL Cup. Which group you are put in (Super vs Premier) is going to be determined by your results of the entire season. Honestly the qualifying for nationals is a bit of baloney since anyone can apply for that tournament. If you pay attention to the teams sent often Tophat sends their top and second SCCL teams. It is a good experience for those kids so I am not trashing that. If they want to go more power to them. I just think it is more propaganda spread to the parents to tell them they are qualifying for anything. 🤷🏻♀️

Teams are welcome to apply for National Cup but you have to go the Regionals route first which means another week and 4-5 games in another state.

I know that is what SCCL says and it is great that they pay the fee. When SCCL Cup was at a decent time this method made some sense. Now that they did a Labor Day tournament preseason it is absolutely STUPID and RIDICULOUS as it gives advantage to teams that had little turnover and clubs that maintain a consistent philosophy where all teams play the same way (like Tophat- no surprise that they won nearly all of the age groups). Oh and it wasn’t a tournament limited to SCCL teams. There were Georgia Soccer teams and even ECRL teams playing. It was a preseason warm up tournament so DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. I am also not 💯 certain that the need to go to Regionals is true. The Nationals cup information that I saw does not state that it requires a qualification tournament. I think the second level is able to be entered without qualification just based on how good you are overall (i.e. the tournament committee decides) Maybe someone who has gone before from Tophat White can tell us. Because Tophat often has the Yellow teams there and a White team as well. I do not know from experience as my older child did not play on any SCCL team. Too old at the start (SCCL did not exist) and then too high level later. My little one has been on a SCCL Champions team. We have never been concerned about Nationals (happy to do other things in the summer). I do think it is more appropriate to send the regular season champion (which is how it was in the initial year) than a tournament champion who may or may not have played other SCCL Champions teams. They should model it after other leagues where your top team(s) in regular season play qualify. (step off soapbox now)

Last year having the tournament at the end of the season was rough for high school age kids. The season was long, there were injuries, and most of the kids just wanted to play high school soccer and be done. Clubs brought in guest players which made average teams really good. It was cold and wet. With Fowlers little concrete bone breakers circling the fields it was not fun. That time might work for the younger kids but not the older ones. This year is the opposite, way to early. Most teams hadn't really come together or had an identity. In many ways most people were not "invested" in their team yet. The turf was too hot. The season now feels odd, like we just had the end of the season tournament what is the point of this. The best solution was a couple years ago when the regular season winner got the bid if they wanted it. Every game counted, it was as if the season meant something. I assume they shifted it to SCCL cup because of a money grab and teams are not going to it as much anymore. The level of participation this year is LOW, where most SCCL-C did not even participate and random ECRL teams joined. With all of that said, and as a parent that has kids playing ECNL and SCCL I want to say that I think Nationals is a money grab for any league level.

Agreed on everything except Nationals for high school age ECNL, GA, MLS NEXT PRO, etc teams for the showcase opportunities to colleges outside of the players’ area of the country. Otherwise it can be hard to be seen by these schools.
