Since we're about 2 weeks away from the end of the regular college soccer season, the dead period and NLI signing for the Class of 2024, I thought it would be nice time to ask some questions of the class. Soon colleges will begin their "winter recruiting tours" and a young lady - Blanca Aaliyah Lilly-Ling (B.A.L.L) would love to play the beautiful game in college. With your help, comments and suggestions, I'd like to guide her on what to do and look out for to ultimately get an offer to play division 1 footy. I may ask questions on her behalf in the hopes of increasing her chances of success... TIA!!!
As a current sophomore, what steps does B.A.L.L need to be doing now, so that in 32+ weeks she's more likely to be chatting with colleges on June 15, 2024 B.A.L.L would like to know about social media, videos, research on colleges, etc.

As a 2026, I assume she has already been seen by some colleges. Typically, most P5 schools start tracking players 1 to 2 yrs before June 15th. If not there's still time to make it up.
I would the following immediately...
1. Create soccer specific gmail account 2. Create twitter account tied to gmail account 3. With gmail account create youtube account for videos 4. Follow college coaches and programs from twitter account 5. Post clips and tag coaches 6. Repost items from team twitter accounts (your team should have a twitter account to provide extra focus on the team and players) 7. Email coaches and always include picture, grad year, height, weight, and twitter account...
None of this guarantees anything but at least you will get on coaches radar.
Good luck!

Could you please give some advice on how many years back the video clips should be? Thank you. Most current clips. Everyone is Georgia is currently in club season, so if you have some from the current season I would start with those... Upload long ones to YouTube... Upload short ones to Twitter and tag coaches... The goal of the post and the account is to help get them to see you in person. Depending on the college soccer level, the main evaluations will be based on seeing the player in person. Great highlights with poor showcase performance will not do much... IMO .... The player must perform when coaches present. Unfortunately, I know many talented players that wilted in showcases or playoffs...

Could you please give some advice on how many years back the video clips should be? Thank you. I would go through game so far this off season. You always want to start with some of the best clips to keep the coach/school engaged. Remember, they will watch mostly on their phones and they get hundreds. I would create a Youtube channel and have different segments. Example, if it's a defender, show their defensive prowess in one video. In another, show their ability to stop the striker and then kick off the counterattack. In another, show how they are able to control and lead an attack, hopefully with them either assisting or scoring. If it's a goalie, always remember to show their footwork. Modern footy now involves the Goalie being an additional defender but with their feet in getting out of a high press. I would keep the videos between 2-3 minutes. Also always sign your emails, videos and all your correspondence. This way they have all the info on your player... Having gone through this process, please know that coaches are not coming to a high school game. Colleges have very limited travel budgets for non-revenue sports. GRADES are EXTREMELY important. Colleges carry around 35 to 40 players with 25 on the playing roster, 18 on the game day roster. As such, Coaches use academic scholarship money for players to offset the limited athletic scholarships available which currently are set at 14 for the women's team and 9 1/2 for the men's team. Those scholarships are divided among the players.
This is why players who play in the top league are most likely to be seen. Kid played ECNL. Team attended college showcases. This team would average 50 - 75 college coaches at their games to watch them. The team manager handed each coach a flyer with each individual players biographical information to include position, high school gpa, SAT score, etc., etc. 10 of the starters received D1 offers, one of their reserve players received D1. I am again saying this to make the point, recruiting is very rarely done at their high school and players are most likely to be seen at the top league showcases.
Good luck to your player.

If yes, should it be included with your regular highlights or should it be a separate video on your Youtube portal of all your other highlights? Another question, you see posts about rankings such as Prep-Soccer, TDS, in your opinion do those matter as much or are they for the most part irrelevant to the task at hand? TIA

TIA I don't think having High School highlights is a bad thing, but I would keep them in separate videos. As for rankings, I believe they carry some weight. However, if you have a club coach pushing your name, more than likely your ranking will be higher...deserved or not. The level you play (ECNL vs ECNL-R vs SCCL) definitely is important. However, college coaches are just like club coaches. If they see something they like, they believe they can work with it. Some will prioritize size, while others will prioritize speed, and others will prioritize overall technical ability. While your player will have weaknesses, if a college coach sees a strength they like, they might discount the weakness and believe they can fix it (other than lack of athleticism, you can't fix genetics). Always try to showcase and highlight the strengths of the player.

I am referring to ID camps hosted by local clubs, where they bring in multiple colleges spanning various levels, including Division 1, 2, 3, NAIA, and JUCO. This approach offers a more budget-friendly option, allowing you to explore diverse coaching styles, ask questions, and experience a variety of training methods. Additionally, you save on expenses associated with traveling to different locations. Moreover, colleges, often hailing from the same region, have the opportunity to witness your performance within the familiar environment of your home club. It's important to note that many local clubs welcome participants who are not members of their club for these ID camps. Lastly, the club sponsored ID Camps have a question-answer panel with some valuable information shared directly from coaches. Personally, I do not endorse commercial enterprises like Exact, and my recommendation for this local example is not motivated by any financial incentives:

Having gone through this process, please know that coaches are not coming to a high school game. I suppose this depends on what school your child plays at, and who their competition is. We have had college coaches in attendance at games each of the past 2 years, and we have already had some coaches tell us they would like to have our high school schedule when it is available. I will admit the coaches are all within driving distance, but they have come to games.

Unless they are from UGA, they are small schools which is ok but not D1 as I referenced. Good luck to your player.

Start to make a list and look at both the school and the soccer program - you can follow @imyouthsoccer on Twitter to see how many commits the school has for the class of 2025 already to get a sense of timing. 2-as others have stated create gmail account - recommend putting class year in email BALL26@gmail.com and Twitter account if BALL doesn't have one already. Send emails to coaches on target list with Showcase schedule and highlight reel 3-if BALL has a dream college might be good to see if they offer ID camps in the winter/spring of 2024 and maybe attend a few targeted camps in the winter/spring of 2024 with goal of coaches seeing your effort/interest/skills before June 15 - get pic with coaches at camp for Twitter and make sure you write a hand written thank you note to coaches after the camp (personal touch). 4-engage on Twitter - say thanks for write-ups or rankings and share teammates posts as well. Hope this helps and good luck to BALL

A college coach wants to pick a player who has particular strengths that will help their team succeed (they will overlook some weaknesses in favor of a strength they need). Then make a 2-3 minute with the best highlights you can muster. I have seen many highlight videos that are simply keeping possession for the team on the ball. This is not going to excite a college coach to continue correspondence or look deeper into your player. Each play should be significant and make an impact that leads to scoring a goal or stopping a dangerous chance. You can private message me if you want an example of a good highlight video. Hope this helps!

You can private message me if you want an example of a good highlight video. Hope this helps! Thanks for responding and for the offer. Follow-up questions for the class are as follows: So I've heard that coaches sometimes want players that also have one or two positions in their repertoire. That way they can be slotted into alternate positions as the team or opponent calls for, T/F? Additionally, what software or app do you recommend one use to create highlight reels? TIA

04gparent I have to agree with you on Twitter and women's college soccer. A lot of recent recruits have mentioned it, and it's a very active and vibrant platform for coaches, colleges, and players to communicate and show interest. This is especially true for players whose coaches are forbidden from chatting with prior to June 15th, after their sophomore year... x.com/ImCollegeSoccer/status/1719740868104499435?s=20

Group Discussion: College Soccer ID Camps: Guidance Needed!
Which types of ID camps should BALL be targeting for her soccer aspirations? How many ID camps should she aim to attend before June 15, especially if she doesn't receive specific invitations? What are the telltale signs that distinguish legitimate invites from money-grabbing schemes? When evaluating the cost of an ID camp, what is considered excessive or reasonable, considering factors like camp amenities like lunch, a T-shirt, campus tours, and Q&A sessions? In terms of location, how far should the camp be from home—within a day's drive, requiring an overnight stay, or even necessitating a flight? Is it advisable to inform your club, high school, or recruiting coach about attending an ID camp so they can relay your interest to the college coaching staff? Also, what do folks think about posting pictures and videos from camps you've attended?
Additionally, keep in mind that many ID camps now encompass a wide range of players, from grades 9 to 12, junior college attendees, and transfer college players. It's crucial to bring your best performance, but remember that coaches assess your potential, and they don't expect a 9th grader to have the same level of college game understanding as a Juco or potential transfer college player. Also, never miss an opportunity to get feedback, and never forget to send a thank-you note to the coaches. Best of luck!!!

The location of the camp should depend on where the player wants to go to school. If they want to play out west, there isn't much point in attending camps around Atlanta or in Florida because most likely coaches from out west won't be there...you can always check the coach list though to be sure. IF the player has no idea where they want to go to school, then camps closer to home would be ideal, just make sure there are multiple coaches attending the camp.
If the player has specific schools in mind, go to their camps. At a younger age, 9th & 10th grade, they might not get serious looks or might even be told it is still early in the process for them. That doesn't mean the coaches aren't taking notes and identifying players they potentially want to recruit in the future.
As for communication, definitely tell your club coach so they can reach out on your behalf. If you club has a recruiting coordinator, tell them as well so they can reach out. Your player (not the parent) should be sending an email before the camp and a thank you email after the camp. Don't be shy about asking for feedback after the camp either. The player also needs to introduce themselves to the coaches at the camp. This should either take place during check-in or warm ups. Lastly, after the camp ends, the player should stick around to thank each coach in attendance.

Could you please give some advice on how many years back the video clips should be? Thank you. The most recent clips and highlights is preferable. Showcase different aspects of the game, like good passing, 1v1, goals, dribbling and movement off of the ball. Do not make it overly long. Post frequently on IG or Twitter. If you need highlight reels done professionally, you can message me directly.

Just to add to this, coaches like to see some of the build up to the highlight moment so they can see the decisions the player made and why. Was it under duress, did you find the right player to pass to, did you make the proper run.... basically, what is the soccer IQ on how the player determined what to do in the sequence of play. So add the extra seconds before and after the play.

BALL, does not have a dream college and is undecided about the type, location, size, etc. she's interested in as of now. But thanks for the suggestions on narrowing down those choices. How many colleges do you think BALL should put on the initial list? What should BALL look for when creating this list from a soccer standpoint? No judgement, do you think posting about ID camps with particular schools helps or hurts? TIA Maybe start with 20-25 target schools and vary them - some P5, some D1, some D2/3. From a soccer standpoint, look at number of players on roster, playing time for players(stats), # transfers, recruiting class size for 2024 and 2025, how long coach has been there and RPI over last few years. Posting about ID camps helps by showing coaches you are making an effort to get to know different schools by going to them - especially if BALL doesn't have a dream school. I think most college coaches know players have a list of colleges just like coaches have a list of potential recruits. Hope this helps.

I will add that players/families should look into the academic requirements for schools you are genuinely interested in. Hate to be a junior and find out you need to take 42 AP courses coupled with a gazillion hours of community service to gain entrance into your top school of choice.

Having a dream school or schools might make things easier as it's a known target and a place to start. You are right knowing the academic requirements is a good thing to research with a dream school. If BALL knows anyone at her club who is already playing at her dream school she might start by reaching out to them and/or talking to her club coaches and indicating she has a dream school and asking the club coaches if they have contacts at said dream school (are they willing to advocate on her behalf). Even with a dream school, plan for back up options as you never know how things shake out with recruiting

Email coaches and always include picture, grad year, height, weight, and twitter account... None of this guarantees anything but at least you will get on coaches radar. Good luck! Twitter/X?? You might as well tell your kid to tag college coaches on MySpace. Twitter/X is very active for girls soccer recruiting and is a great way for the kids to get to know the coaches a bit. Go back through their tweets and you will see what they post about, how they treat their school and players publicly. Private interactions are harder to figure out but there is definitely truth to their public persona.

Twitter/X is VERY active for most youth sports recruiting now (soccer, football, softball, volleyball...). I didn't believe it at first either. However, you can tell by the verbiage choices that most are run by parents haha. I would still add it to the list of though.
