Live, 3 minutes from now Clemson vs Notre Dame. Local kid, Remi Okunlola, is a freshman for Clemson. He played for Atlanta United Academy (and UFA prior to that), graduating from Brookwood HS. He wasn’t playing much earlier in the season but has played a good bit more as the season has gone on and scored in the ACC tournament.

These two teams don’t like each other.

… with the National Championship Clemson now has 4. Two for Mike Noonan and 2 for the late, great I.M. Ibrahim.
Men’s Soccer National Championships by school: Saint Louis (10), Indiana (8), Virginia (7), Maryland (4), UCLA (4), San Francisco (4), Clemson (4).

He wasn’t playing much earlier in the season but has played a good bit more as the season has gone on and scored in the ACC tournament. There is also another local kid on the Clemson team - Nathan Richmond. I could be wrong but I believe he also played with the Remi Okunlola kid at AU. Fun-Fact Nathan's father also won a National Championship in 1987, also with Clemson. Father - Son duo winning National Champions. The question(s) of the day and maybe the elephant in the room is this: Knowing that 99% or more of their players will NOT be signed to a pro contract and will instead flow into the college ranks, why have we not seen or heard anything highlighting these two products from AU academy, across the social media landscape for the Five Stripes 🤔 Why not highlight them while conversely highlighting your academy product. To me it's low hanging fruit in the marketing sphere. Is this why some recent academy products are refusing to sign with AU 🤔

Wonder how many of the homegrowns would do it again, knowing what they do now.

I went to HS with a guy who was a freshman on the Clemson soccer team in 1988, wonder if he played with Richmond’s dad?

Clemson’s first national championship was 39 years ago and second was 3-years later. They are very proud of their men’s soccer program, its strongly supported, and viewed a little bit differently, maybe, than some other schools.
The 1984 championship squad featured future USMNT icon Bruce Murray as a true freshman and Nigirian striker Adubarie Otonrubie. Team was extremely talented and beat powerhouse program Indiana in the finals. The 1987 National Championship team was on paper far less talented, however, had an older and more experienced Murray. They made a run in the NCAA tournament to face and beat an Eric Wynalda led San Diego State team in the finals.

I know of 3 who absolutely would not go down that route. Matter of fact, they convinced 3 potential HG to turn it down... That really speaks volumes about our current system… I think these days, most kids interested in a career in the beautiful game are up on IG, ticky tocky and all the relevant social media. They are not blind and the history is there for them to see that most HG that get signed are in quick sand and at the behest and glory of Atlanta United. Plus all the signings from South America and Europe are splashed over SM. So in essence, there is no belief that you will ever be given a chance to develop into a first team player...
