I may be in the minority, but I am pretty excited. Planning to take my kids as none of us have seen the USWNT play in person before. Hope the team goes against some good competition.
I’m also looking forward to the USMNT playing Panama in June at MBS. A lot of great soccer happening in Atlanta over the next 6-7 months!

The gift that just keeps on giving. Rapinoe must be a miserable person to be around.

USWNT has moved on.
It’s exciting to see the potential in the next generation of young players, like Sophia Smith Niomi Girma, Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson. They haven’t even peaked yet as far as what they are capable of. AND they will be training here Atlanta soon!

If ya can’t stand her.. and it is understandable… why write a story about an athlete that was put out to pasture in the recent past.. over something she said a long time ago? Clickbait is an illness.

I’m not a Rapinoe fan (I do think what she said about there being no God after her injury was really narcissistic), but if you watched the documentary and heard the quote, you’d know the article creates its own context. She may be deserving of criticism for other things but probably not for this quote.

To me, it's a great lesson in leadership and team building - specifically how allowing one toxic member can destroy a high performing team. Many times organizations are improved by removing toxic members, particularly those who bully others, regardless of performance. I used to be a 10/10 USWNT supporter, even a Rapinoe fan in her early days. Her fingerprints are all over the decline of the program, including polluting a generation of younger players, even running some off. I'm glad she's gone and hope the team recovers in good order. Still think a few more departures are in order before many are excited by this group again. Honestly hoping for the best.

A majority of her team likes her. A majority of women’s soccer fans like her. She has done incredible things for the sport. There is 1 player that I know of who does not like Megan Rapinoe. This person has a commentating position at FOX Soccer and was able to spew negativity toward the USWNT and Rapinoe for the entirety of their albeit short trip to New Zealand. If we want to talk about narcissism we can maybe discuss a cross country (multiple stops) retirement tour. If you hate what Rapinoe stands for you should also hate Morgan, Dunn, Rodman, Smith, Wambach, Girma, Sauerbrunn, Foudy, and so many more current and former players on and off the USWNT. It makes sense that if you are a conservative you may disagree with what Rapinoe has to say. You are valid to feel that way. As a Christian you may not like what she said about God. That’s valid. But you’ve got to get a grip. All Megan Rapinoe is guilty of is saying things you don’t like. Supporting causes you oppose. Being “unpatriotic”. When Rapinoe took a knee, she did it alongside her teammate Crystal Dunn. When Rapinoe advocated for trans athletes she wasn’t talking about a man in a wig, she was advocating for players like her trans teammate Quinn. When Rapinoe advocated for equal pay it was for players like Thompson who will not know anything else. And to do all of that knowing that she is going to bear the brunt of the anonymous threats, and hate has honestly got to be the embodiment of patriotism. Stop “advocating” for women’s soccer by actively opposing everything it stands for.

Couple takeaways from the Netflix Under Pressure USWNT documentary during the previous World Cup. I just watched it …
1. Losing Mallory Swanson to a knee injury was huge. A playmaker and a game changer that would have made a difference.
2. Vlatko prioritized being friends with players over coaching.
3. Vlatko’s selection criteria for adding players was flawed.
He basically stated during his call with Kristie Mewis, valuable player “on the field and off the field”. This can be interpreted a lot of different ways. However, IMO National Team selection should be simple. The BEST US PLAYERS on the field, provided they have the right attitude. Maybe I’m reading too much into this but it feels like a better, more deserving, young player could have been passed over. Somewhere along the journey we lost our way. The USWNT should be about soccer.
3. There was a general sence of complacency. No sence of urgency. Where was the, “we need to win and win now because I may never get this chance again” attitude?
This was especially true with Rapinoe and Vlatko and in my opinion it rubbed off on the others. Call me crazy but I actually thought Lynn Williams had much better veteran leadership qualities than Rapinoe.
4. Adding Julie Ertz and Kelley O’Hara in the very last training camp after they weren’t there the entire time was a mistake.
The players who were fighting for spots since the beginning of camps were suddenly passed over by Ertz a player who wasn’t there for two years. What was that about? IMO, this sends the wrong message.
5. After a near loss to Potugal, players were dancing and laughing with fans after the game.
It took someone outside of the immediate team, Carly Lloyd, to call them on it and basically say this kind of behavior is unacceptable and to focus on your priorities. “I have never witnessed something like that,” she said. “There’s a difference between being respectful of the fans and saying hello to your family, but to be dancing, to be smiling — I mean, the player of the match was that post. You’re lucky to not be going home right now.”. Unfortunately, Carly was a little to late.

I am happy they are coming to ATL, but originally didn’t bother to post because I wasn’t even the slightest bit surprised. I mean they just announced their movement of their headquarters to ATL it just makes sense to have a major match here. Also they need to work on preparing the Benz for more matches like the USMNT games upcoming and then the World Cup 2026. Practice runs with working on the grass and security and a million other things also makes sense.
The tickets were $60 each for our usual ATL seats which are pretty good.
We have always rooted for the team. We have players we like and ones we don’t both for personality reasons (never liked Carli or Hope) and for soccer reasons. Same goes for every team I have ever been a fan of professionally or collegiately in all sports. My kids and spouse and I may not even agree on that sports-wise or personality-wise. So what?!? Players come and go. I definitely think Rapinoe stayed longer than would have been necessary soccer wise except we had no true wingers. She was the only player who would stay wide and send in crosses. It was unfortunate that her crosses and set pieces were not as good as they needed to be in the World Cup. My guess is she stopped training as much on her own as she used to do and thus accuracy suffered. The lose is Swanson definitely affected this issue. And Alex Morgan struggled to combine with people all crowding her space rather than sending in crosses. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
Well I expect things to improve massively under Hayes but it may take at least one year together and for her to evaluate the talent. I am excited for the future of women’s soccer regardless of the US because it is definitely more competitive and people are actually trying to make it a more professional environment. Whether you hate Rapinoe or not she is partially responsible for people for that so I agree with previous poster on that issue.
