Can someone please explain the super draft to me? I was watching and a kid got “drafted” but then said he was going to play two more years of college soccer…

It would be like an NFL livestock sale except the “winners” here only get a tryout and often don’t get a contract at all. #runaway

Can someone please explain the super draft to me? I was watching and a kid got “drafted” but then said he was going to play two more years of college soccer… The super draft is akin to the regular draft you see for the NFL or NBA. It is specifically for players coming from college. Prior to this year's draft, only seniors and graduates where eligible to be in the draft. In October, that was changed to now allow sophomores and juniors to be eligible to enter the draft. Freshmen are still not eligible, unless they are signed as GA - Generation Adidas players. With the new addition of sophomores and juniors, the conundrum is if you draft the players, they have the option to not play for the team that drafted them and return to college. As long as they do NOT report for pre-season camp. If they do report, they lose their college eligibility. However, once a team drafts you, they own your rights until December of the year after you are drafted. So, any player who is drafted and has remaining college eligibility can take the option to return to school rather than turning professional. However, they will not be eligible for the SuperDraft in the future, and whichever club drafted them holds their SuperDraft priority for the next two years. So for those drafted Tuesday for the 2024 SuperDraft, they own your rights until December 2025. Hope that helps... In other news, Garrison Tubbs, the most recent AU Homegrown signed on Friday the 15th, out of Wake Forest, was traded to DC United just before AU picked in the first round. No big deal, trades happen all the time. Word is he found out on TV and confirmed when the DC front office reached out to welcome him. Classy AU, real classy...

Like most people, I don’t really think about the MLS superdraft until after it happens. Unlike baseball or football, it’s hard to find stats from previous years to see how many of these players make rosters, signing bonuses, and what the final contracts look like. I’m assuming most players sign closer to the league minimum, with signing bonus and upside of earning more? Curious anybody have a link to an article with historical data, trends here?
I’m typically not very knowledgeable of players being drafted however just by shear consisdence once heard a college coach talking about how good the Lipscomb strikers were. Tyrese Spicer (Trinidad & Tabago) who was taken number one overall was evidently presigned prior to the draft. Also, his understanding is Toronto may convert him to an outside back which is interesting?

I apologize for crapping on the super draft (like all things MLS). Big congrats to any player having the talent to be drafted. I wish we would see more of the league comprised of home grown and draftees rather than seeing teams take a flyer and spend big on guys like Zeke Barco.

Classy AU, real classy... if this is true - 2 words absolutely disgusting he's a homegrown player treat him with respect vs as a pawn. I get it sports is ugly, trades happen, but come on man, led the kid know... oh and didn't atlanta draft like 6 keepers (kidding), and apparently wants the kids to go back to school..
